Brady Equipment Company, of Portland, has been one of the leading dealers in railroad supplies in the Pacific northwest, and Michael F. Brady long ago established a well merited reputation as an able and progressive business man. He was born in New York city in 1862 and is a son of James and Ann (Touhey) Brady. About 1870 the family went to Brazil, South America, where they remained until 1872, when they came to Portland, Oregon. The father was long a blacksmith foreman for Ben Holliday on the Oregon-California Railroad, but is now retired from active affairs and is still residing in Portland, at the age of ninety-one, and remarkably hale and active for his years. Michael F. Brady received his education in the public schools of Portland, and in 1878, when sixteen years of age, went to work for the Oregon- California Railroad, with which he remained until 1891, when he became master mechanic for the street car lines of Portland, which position he held until 1903. In that year Mr. Brady embarked in the railway equipment business on his own account, organizing the M. F. Brady Equipment Company, and has carried it on successfully to the present time, being now located at 486 Twenty-second street north. He takes pride in the fact that if there is anything needed in the way of railroad supplies, he is prepared to furnish it promptly in any quantity, and his reputation for trustworthiness and dependability has been one of his best assets. His sales territory covers Oregon and Washington and he has jobbed a vast amount of goods of various kinds during the twenty-five years in which he has been in the business. In 1886 Mr. Brady was united in marriage to Miss Mary A. Donlon, of Massachusetts, and to them have been born three children, namely: William F. and James D., who are associated with their father in business, and Frances, who is the wife of Arthur M. Mears, of Portland. Mr. Brady is a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, the Knights of Columbus and the Irvington Club, and gives his political support to the republican party. He has ever shown a live interest in the prosperity and welfare of his community, has done his full share in promoting its interests, and is regarded as one of its best citizens, standing high in the esteem of all who know him.
