J. Clarke Publishing Company One of the successful automobile dealers in Portland is J. C. Braly, who is the distributor of Franklin cars for the state of Oregon. He has succeeded in organizing an effective corps of local agents through the state and is regarded as an able and enterprising business man. Mr. Braly was born in McMinnville, Oregon, on the 10th of October, 1875, and is a son of James C. and Mary (Whistburn) Braly, who were natives of Missouri. His family has been identified with the development of the Pacific coast country from a very early day, his paternal grandfather, who was active in the ministry, having organized the first Presbyterian church in the Santa Clara valley, California. James C. Braly accompanied his father across the plains in the '50s and located first in Oregon. Later he went to California, where he engaged in mining for awhile, and on his return to Oregon bought a thousand-acre ranch, called "The Riverside Farm," near McMinnville. He lived there until the fall of 1886, when he returned to California, where he remained until his death. While living at McMinnville he organized a private bank, which is now the McMinnville National Bank, and he also served two terms as a member of the Oregon State senate. His wife came across the plains with her parents in 1846 and located in California, where she met and became the wife of James C. Braly. J. C. Braley received his educational training in the public schools of San Diego, California, after which he engaged in the hardware business, in which he met with gratifying success. He was for three years vice president of the Fullerton State Bank, at Fullerton, Orange county, and in 1910 he was employed as a salesman by R. C. Hamlin, of Los Angeles. In the following year he came to Portland as state distributor for the Franklin car, in which he has continued to the present time. He has organized a splendid sales force and has erected a fine office building at Fourteenth and Burnside streets, two stories and basement and one hundred by one hundred feet. In addition, he owns other valuable property in this city, as well as an attractive home. Mr. Braly was united in marriage to Miss Blanche Sheppard, of San Diego, California, who died in 1911, leaving two children, Malcolm Sheppard, who died in 1918, and James Whistburn, who is now associated with his father in business. In 1918 Mr. Braly was married to Miss Kathrine Pogosnick. Mr. Braly is a stanch supporter of the republican party and has shown a genuine interest in matters affecting the welfare of his city and state. He is a Knight Templar Mason; is a life member of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine and belongs to the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. His name is on the membership rolls of the Portland Golf Club, the Audubon Society, the Chamber of Commerce, the Oregon State Motor Association and the Oregon State Automotive Association, and he is a life member of the American Ornithologists Union of New York. He is a persistent booster for Portland, to the interests of which he is intensely loyal, and he has well merited the confidence and respect which are accorded him by his fellowmen.
