J. Clarke Publishing Company In affairs connected with developing the timber interests of Oregon and Washington, Theo. B. Brown, of Portland, has long been conspicuous, being regarded as an expert and reliable engineer. He has also been active and successful in financing large operations. Mr. Brown was born in Schenectady, New York, a son of Colonel Clinton Churchill and Anna (Ramsay) Brown, both now deceased. His father, who was an officer in the Union army during the Civil war, was for many years successfully engaged in the furniture manufacturing business, and became a man of prominence and influence in his city. Mr. Brown's maternal grandfather, Henry Ramsay, was a noted railroad contractor and built the first railroad line from Schenectady to Albany, New York. Theo. B. Brown attended Union College with the class of 1898. He engaged in engineering work and, going to Colorado, devoted his attention to irrigation projects for two years. In 1907 he first came to Portland, and here two years later established his permanent residence, opening a forest engineer's office under the firm name of Brown & Brown, his partner being his brother, Horatio J. Brown, who died in December, 1921, since which time he has carried the business on alone. He is now chairman of the board of Brown & Brown, which concern is engaged in railroad location work, general topographical engineering and timber estimating, in which lines the firm is regarded as one of the most competent and reliable in this section of the country. Mr. Brown is also president of the Lincoln-Tillamook Timber Company, and is associate western manager for Baker, Fentress & Company, of Chicago, bankers to the lumber interests. This firm specializes in timber securities, issuing bonds on timber, has been a very important factor in promoting the development of some of the most important timber tracts in the country and has over twelve million dollars loaned in Washington and Oregon alone. In June, 1912, Mr. Brown was united in marriage to Miss Anna L. Sanborn, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Mr. Brown gives his political support to the republican party and is a member of the University Club, the Multnomah Athletic Club and the Multnomah Golf Club. He possesses keen judgment in all matters regarding timber, to every detail of which he has given deep study, and his opinions are held in high regard by all who have had occasion to consult him or employ his services as an engineer. He is exact and thorough in everything which he undertakes and conscientious and dependable in all of his business relations, so that he commands unqualified confidence and respect, while, socially, his cordial and unaffected manner has gained for him a host of warm and loyal friends.
