J. Clarke Publishing Company B. C. BUCK, who was the pioneer in establishing an exclusive ambulance service in Portland, has met with well merited success and now owns a number of thoroughly modern ambulances and limousines, whereby he is enabled to render prompt and efficient service in any part of the city. Mr. Buck was born in Portland January 11, 1890, and is a son of Carsten and Caroline (Schlottmann) Buck, who were married in Portland, to which city they had come as young people. The father was a native of Germany, from which country he emigrated to the United States at the age of thirteen years. He lived in New York city a few years and then came to Portland, where he later engaged in a general merchandise business. He died in 1920 and is survived by his widow, who still resides in this city. B. C. Buck attended the public schools until he graduated from high school and then entered the employ of Henry Jennings & Sons, with whom he remained for five years. In 1913 he embarked on an independent business career, establishing an ambulance service, and bought the first Cunningham ambulance owned in this city. Success attended him from the start and he has gradually increased his equipment until he now owns five ambulances and two funeral cars. He gives day and night service, promptly answering all calls, and has built up an excellent reputation for the painstaking care which is exercised by his employees in the service which they render. He has his headquarters on Glisan street, where he has a room sixty by fifty feet, and the success which has come to him is but the legitimate result of his determined efforts and sound judgment in all of his affairs. In 1910 Mr. Buck was united in marriage to Miss Kathryn Stein, whose father, Ernest Stein, was a pioneer contractor and builder of this city. Mr. and Mrs. Buck have two children, Bernard, now fifteen years of age, and Kathryn, aged thirteen years. The republican party claims Mr. Buck's allegiance and he has shown keen interest in matters affecting the welfare of his community. He is a member of Portland Lodge, No. 55, A. F. & A. M.; Portland Consistory, A. A. S. R.; Al Kader Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S.; Portland Lodge, No. 142, B. P. O. E.; and the Alderwood Country Club. Progressive in his ideas and enterprising in his methods, he has gained a worthy success, for it has been gained through honest and earnest effort, and he commands the uniform, respect of all who know him.
