L. CLARK, secretary of the Portland Livestock Exchange and member of the livestock commission firm of BoDine & Clark, well merits the reputation which he enjoys as a capable, progressive and reliable business man. He was born in Clarksburg, Decatur county, Indiana, in 1882, and is a son of J. B. and Una May (Johnson) Clark and a grandson of Woodson Clark, who founded the town of Clarksburg. His father followed the occupation of farming during the greater part of his active life, but is now retired and he and his wife reside in Portland. R. L. Clark attended the public and high schools of his home town and then entered Ohio Wesleyan University, at Delaware, Ohio, from which he was graduated in 1907. Returning home, he devoted his attention to agricultural pursuits for seven years, and in 1914 came to Portland and entered into a partnership with Ira D. BoDine, under the firm name of BoDine & Clark, as livestock commission merchants. This is now the oldest and largest firm engaged in this business at the Union stockyards and through this connection Mr. Clark has met with very gratifying success. For the past ten years he has rendered effective service as secretary of the Portland Livestock Exchange and is regarded as one of the leaders in the livestock business of the Portland district. In 1907 Mr. Clark was united in marriage to Miss Olive Critchett, of Marion, Ohio, and they are the parents of four children, Woodson, Robert, Prosser and Thomas. Mr. Clark is a member of Clarksburg Lodge, No. 24, A. F. & A. M., at Clarksburg, Indiana; Oregon Consistory, No. 1, A. A. S. R.; Al Kader Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S., and the Sigma Chi college fraternity. A man of substantial qualities, reliable in his judgment and honorable in all of his dealings, he commands the uniform confidence and esteem of all who know him.
