Clarke Publishing Company PAUL H. COCHRAN is one of the most successful and prominent paving and grading contractors of the Columbia River valley. In association with his brother, Thomas L. Cochran, he has done a vast amount of public work in Portland and vinicity, in all of which he has executed his contracts in a manner that has won for him an enviable reputation for reliability and trustworthiness. Mr. Cochran was born in Fifield, Price county, Wisconsin, in 1892, and is a son of T. H. and Lilly (Rossman) Cochran. His father was born in Arostook county, Maine, in 1868, and was a son of Sandy Cochran, a native of Limerick, Ireland. He went to Wisconsin in about 1880 and engaged in the logging contracting business, in which he was successful. In 1903 he came to Portland and engaged in the contracting and building business. He was one of the founders of St. Johns and erected the old Cochran block, which is now called the Central building, and which at the time of its construction was the best building in St. Johns. He also did a large amount of grading contracting. He prospered in his business affairs and became prominent and influential in the political and business circles of his locality. His wife was born in Sheboygan county, Wisconsin, and was a daughter of Paul Rossman, who was a native of Germany and became a pioneer of Wisconsin. Mrs. Cochran still resides in St. Johns. Paul H. Cochran attended the public and high schools and had two years' work in Oregon Agricultural College, after which he joined his father and brother in the contracting business. Since their father's death, the sons have carried the business on, ably sustaining the prestige gained by their father for capable and dependable ability in their line of business. They make a specialty of street paving and grading, having done a large part of the concrete paving in Portland, and have built Fremont street and Forty-second street to Sandy boulevard. They have also built ten miles of concrete highway in Yamhill county. They employ, on an average, from seventy-five to one hundred men and have a complete and up-to-date equipment. In 1914, Mr. Cochran was united in marriage to Miss Gladys Garvin, of Portland, and they have a daughter, Margaret. Mr. Cochran gives his political support to the republican party and has shown a commendable interest in the affairs of his city and county, contributing by his efforts to the advancement of the public welfare. Cordial and affable, he enjoys a wide acquaintance and is held in high regard by all who know him. His brother, Thomas L. Cochran, was born in Iron River, Wisconsin, in 1895, and is a graduate of the Portland high school. Since leaving school he has been closely identified with the contracting business and is now a partner of his brother Paul. He married Miss Mary Ledford, of Portland, and they have a son, Thomas L., Jr. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/or/multnomah/bios/cochran1209gbs.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/orfiles/ File size: 3.6 Kb
