Clarke Publishing Company WILLIAM B. CRANE, president of W. B. Crane & Company, of Portland, has been numbered among the enterprising and progressive business men of this city for over a quarter of a century and has met with well merited success. He was born in Salem, Oregon, in June, 1879, and is a son of W. B. and Alice (McCully) Crane. His father came to Oregon in 1862 and for a number of years was on steamers running on the Columbia river between The Dalles and Walla Walla, on which he acted as purser. He also constructed a large flume at Auburn, Oregon, for mining purposes for Captain J. C. Ainsworth and others. He was also personally interested in mining and was active in the affairs of this section of the coast country for many years. He is now deceased, and his widow makes her home in Portland. Her father, Asa A. McCully, crossed the plains to Oregon in 1852, and became the founder of the town of Harrisburg. He was the resident of the People's Transportation Company and was one of the first to operate boats on the Willamette river. William B. Crane attended the public schools of Portland, graduating from high school. Later he went to Boston, Massachusetts, where he was engaged in business for two years, and in 1902 he established his present business in Portland, under the name of W. B. Crane & Company, wholesale dealers in equipment for carbonated beverage manufacturers. He was at first located at 231 Oak street, and then successively at 70 First street, 92 Front street and one or two other places, and in 1924 came to his present location at 386 Flanders street. This is now the oldest establishment in its line in the northwest and its sales territory covers the entire Pacific coast region. In addition to the home office in Portland, the company established a branch office in Seattle, Washington, in 1922, and in 1926 established offices at San Francisco and Los Angeles. They have five traveling salesmen and the business has enjoyed a steady and substantial growth from the time of its inception. In 1904 Mr. Crane was united in marriage to Miss Lillian Lewis, of Portland, and they are the parents of three children, Walton B., Ethel Lewis and William McCully. Mr. Crane gives his political support to the republican party and is a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and the Knights of the Round Table. He has shown a high type of executive ability in the management of his business, has proven a good citizen in the best sense of the term and has been constant and dependable in all of life's relations, so that he is well worthy of the confidence and respect of his fellowmen.
