Clarke Publishing Company REV. WILLIAM A. DALY, a representative of the priesthood in northwestern Oregon, has long and successfully filled the pastorate of St. Mary's parish of Portland. A native of Prince Edward Island, Canada, born May 22, 1872, he is a son of Thomas and Margaret Daly, both of whom are deceased. The father was engaged in agricultural pursuits during his active career. Father William A. Daly acquired his early education in the public schools and continued his studies in St. Dunstan's College of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, from which he was graduated in 1893. Subsequently he entered Laval University of Quebec, Canada, one of the oldest educational institutions on the North American continent where he was graduated and ordained a priest in 1897. The same year he came to Oregon, locating first at Roseburg, but a short time later removed to Eugene, where he remained for a period of eighteen months. His next charge was at Salem, where he succeeded Father S. J. White and continued for five and one-half years, at the end of which time he was made pastor of St. Mary's parish of Portland as the successor of the late Bishop Charles J. O'Reilly. This parish was established in 1886 and has had only three pastors — Fathers Van Lin, O'Reilly and Daly. During Father Daly's incumbency eleven parishes have been organized from the congregation of which he originally took charge. St. Mary's now comprises five hundred families. The elementary school was established in 1887 and since that time a high school has been added which offers the regular four-year course, is taught by Dominican sisters and is accredited by the University of Oregon. Plans have been made for the erection of a large educational institution, the first unit of which is now being built at a cost of fifty thousand dollars. The high school offers complete courses in the arts and sciences. Father Daly has inspired the young people of his parish with life's highest ideals and has filled their hearts with a desire for unselfish service in the cause of righteousness. The Columbus Club for young people had its inception under his leadership, and the various departments of St. Mary's have prospered under his wise and capable control.
