Clarke Publishing Company Author: History of the Columbia River Valley From The Dalles to the Sea, Vol. III, Published 1928, Pages 272 - 273 GEORGE C. DIERKING, of Portland, possesses a thorough technical knowledge of boiler making and allied lines and as vice president and production manager of the Steel Tank and Pipe Company is rendering a service that has contributed largely to the success of the concern. He was born in New Albany, Floyd county, Indiana, on the 21st of February, 1873, and is a son of Conrad and Henrietta (Zank) Dierking, both now deceased. His father was for many years engaged in the trucking and drayage business. George C. Dierking received a public school education and then learned the boilermaking trade, which he followed as a journeyman for a number of years in various parts of the country. Eventually he became superintendent of the Henry Vogt Machine Company, at Louisville, Kentucky, which position he held until 1902, when he came to Portland as superintendent of the boiler department of the Willamette Iron and Steel Works. He held that position until 1911, when he entered the employ of Poole & McGonigle, structural iron and steel manufacturers, for whom he served as superintendent until 1923. His next position was with the West Coast Iron and Steel Company as production manager, and on the reorganization of the business in 1924, at which time its name was changed to the Steel Tank and Pipe Company, he was made vice president and production manager, which dual relation he still sustains. The present plant of the company, which is located on Columbia boulevard, was completed in 1925 and includes fifteen acres of ground, of which five acres are covered with the buildings. The company's output consists mainly of steel tanks and pipes and welded products in steel. Sixty men are employed and the volume of the company's business runs to over half a million dollars a year. In 1911 Mr. Dierking was united in marriage to Miss Caroline Jeffers, a daughter of Elijah C. and Jane S. Jeffers. She is descended from real pioneer stock, the Jeffers family having been established here in 1847. Mrs. Dierking's grandfather visited the location of Portland in 1847, but decided that Astoria offered the best prospects for future advancement and took up a donation land claim there, on which he engaged in dairy farming and stockraising. Mr. Dierking is a strong republican in his political views, and, public-spirited, has shown a constant interest in the welfare of the community. He is a Mason, belonging to Oregon Lodge, No. 101; Oregon Consistory, No. 1, A. A. S. R.; and Al Kader Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S. He is also connected with the Portland Chamber of Commerce. A man of sincere purpose and upright life, he has been true to all the obligations of citizenship, and has won and retains the uniform confidence and respect of his fellowmen.
