E. DUFFY, recognized as one of the active, prosperous and enterprising livestock commission men of North Portland, was born in Portland, Oregon, on the 30th of December, 1891, and is a son of J. F. and Mary J. (Malia) Duffy. His father, who for many years was identified with the mining industry, retired and in 1891 came to Portland to live. He died in 1927 and his widow still resides in this city. J. E. Duffy attended the public schools of Portland, graduating from high school, and then entered Columbia University, in this city, from which he was graduated in 1911. He went to work for O. M. Plumber at the old stockyards and was later in the employ of the stockyards company and various commission firms until 1923, in July of which year he engaged in the commission brokerage business on his own account, under the name of the Duffy Commission Company. He handles all kinds of stock and his business has enjoyed a steady and substantial growth. Mr. Duffy is also president of the J. E. Duffy Investment Company and a director of the Portland Livestock Exchange. In his political views Mr. Duffy maintains an independent attitude, voting according to the dictates of his judgment, but always supporting those measures which are calculated to promote the public welfare. A man of high ideals, straightforward manner and of strong social qualities, he enjoys a wide acquaintance and has a host of warm and loyal friends, who esteem him for his genuine worth as a man and citizen.
