Clarke Publishing Company DR. WILLIAM HENRY EWIN, M. D. is one of the older physicians of Portland in years of continuous practice here, having been active in the profession for more than two decades. He was born in Missouri, May 1, 1868, his parents being Henry G. and Martha (Pritchett) Ewin. His youth was largely passed in the vicinity of Independence, Jackson county, Missouri, where he attended the district schools and also spent one year as a pupil in the Woodland school of Independence. He was afterward employed in a drug store in that city for a year and it was this which awakened his interest in medical practice and led him to matriculate as a medical student in the University of Missouri, which he entered in the fall of 1889, completing his course by graduation with the class of 1891. It was always his desire to come west and through a friend he learned that a physician was needed at Cove, Union county, Oregon, so to that place he made his way. 'However, the expected practice did not materialize and in April, 1892, he removed to Union, where he continued for four years, meeting with gratifying success and becoming recognized as one of the best physicians of that section of the state. However, he sought a still broader field of labor when on the 1st of April, 1906, he came to Portland, settling in Sunnyside, almost opposite the site of his present office, which is at 983- 1/2 Belmont street. He continues in the general practice of medicine, although specializing to a large extent in diseases of the eye, ear, nose and throat. In the fall of 1897 he went to the New York Polyclinic for postgraduate work and again in 1905 he took up postgraduate work, this time in Chicago. He has always kept abreast with the trend of modern professional thought and practice and is familiar with the latest discoveries and principles that have to do with the medical profession. He belongs to both the City and County Medical Society and the American Medical Association. Dr. Ewin was united in marriage to Miss Hettie Dobbin, of Union, a daughter of John and Florence (Johnson) Dobbin, whose people were pioneers of this section of the state. Dr. and Mrs. Ewin have five children. William Haskell, who was born April 6, 1896, was accidentally drowned on the 14th of July, 1914. James Edwin, born May 11, 1898, married Alma Johnson of Portland and resides on a farm in the vicinity of La Grande, Oregon. John Henry, whose natal day was April 20, 1900, married Mamime Alderman, of La Grande. Martha Florence, twin sister of John Henry, is the wife of Clarence W. Green, of La Grande. Walton Herbert was born November 24, 1915. Fraternally Dr. Ewin is a Mason, having joined the order at Union, Oregon, while now he has membership with Sunnyside Lodge No. 163, F. & A. M., and also with the chapter and commandery at La Grande. When he took up his abode in Sunnyside the population of this section of the city was small and Belmont, now one of the fine and broad thoroughfares of Portland, was paved with planks and horse-drawn wagons had to be guided most carefully or they would upset owing to deep holes. Dr. Ewin has lived to see marked changes until the district in which his office is located is one of the thickly populated and highly improved districts of Portland. His ability in his chosen field has gained for him a liberal patronage, with attendant gratifying financial return, and he is now numbered among the older physicians of the east side.
