J. Clarke Publishing Company ALBERT FELDENHEIMER, who has been engaged in the jewelry business in Portland for forty-four years, is the owner of the oldest and largest jewelry store in the northwest and ranks with the leading merchants of this section of the country. He was born in Germany in 1857, receiving a public and high school education in his native land and there learned the jeweler's trade. In 1873 he came to the United States, landing at New York, and in the same year went to San Francisco, where he was employed by a wholesale manufacturing company. In 1874 he went to Virginia City, Nevada, where he remained six months when he returned to San Francisco and was again with the company by which he was formerly employed. He was there until July, 1876, when he came to Portland where he has been a resident continuously since. He went to work in the Stone jewelry store, which was established by B. L. Stone in 1868, and was first located on Front Street, near Alder street. In 1876 it was moved to First and Morrison streets, where it remained until 1894, when it was moved to Third and Washington streets, at the location of the Ladd & Tilton bank. Later the store was established at Washington and Park streets and in 1923 came to its present location at Washington and West Park streets. Mr. Feldenheimer remained as an employee in the Stone jewelry store until 1884, when he bought the business, and in 1900 his brother, Charles Feldenheimer, bought an interest in the store. A large and well selected stock of jewelry, diamonds, silverware, watches, clocks and auxiliary lines is carried and this store has always commanded the patronage of the representative people of the city. In the '90s Mr. Feldenheimer installed the big clock on the Oregonian building, which at that time was the largest clock on the Pacific coast. It is still there and keeps accurate time, being one of the landmarks of this section of the city. Mr. Feldenheimer designed the silver service for the battleship "Oregon" and also made the gold sword which was presented to Captain (later Admiral) Clark, who commanded that ship on its historic run from the Pacific coast to join the Atlantic fleet during the Spanish-American war. Mr. Feldenheimer has also designed and made many medals, in which line of work he is an expert. He has made a number of trips to Europe to buy diamonds, but of late years has sent a representative instead. In 1889 Mr. Feldenheimer was united in marriage to Miss Rose Ackerman, who is a native of California, and they now have two sons. Roy, who graduated in mining engineering from the University of Oregon, enlisted for service in the World war, was commissioned a lieutenant, and served two and a half years overseas. Paul, who was a lieutenant with the American forces, is associated with his father in business. Mr. Feldenheimer is a Mason and a member of Portland Consistory, A. A. S. R., he was honored by having conferred on him the thirty-third and last degree of Freemasonry in 1924. He also has membership in Al Kader Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S. He belongs to the Chamber of Commerce, of which he was a director for six years; the Concordia Country Club and the Tualatin Country Club. In his political views he is a stanch republican and during all the years of his residence in Portland has shown a readiness to cooperate with his fellowmen in the promotion of measures for the betterment of the city. Kindly and courteous in manner, of unimpeachable integrity and dependable judgment, he commands to an unusual degree the confidence and respect of the people of this city.
