Clarke Publishing Company ARTHUR E. FENDALL. One of Portland's notable food supply houses is the Barker Bread Company, of which Arthur E. Fendall is secretary, and manager, and which supplies a superior quality of bread to many thousands of families in Portland and vicinity. Mr. Fendall was born in Yamhill county, Oregon, on the 7th of September, 1896, and is a son of Edward and Fannie (Campbell) Fendall, both of whom are natives of Oregon. His paternal grandfather, Charles E. Fendall, who was a native of Maryland, came to Oregon in 1843 in the first wagon train to pass down the Columbia river to The Dalles, whence they proceeded down the river on rafts. In 1848, in this state, he married Miss Amanda Rogers, who came to Oregon by way of the Barlow pass in 1846. In 1849 Mr. Fendall joined the gold rush to California, and in 1852 went to Kentucky, by way of the isthmus of Panama, bought a herd of Durham cattle and drove them overland to Oregon, these being the first cattle of that breed brought to Yamhill county. Edward Fendall had a personal acquaintance with General Phil Sheridan. He followed farming and in the '60s hauled grain to Portland in wagons. He was born in 1854 and is the fourth in order of birth of fourteen children, eleven of whom are deceased. He now lives on a well improved farm near Portland. Fannie (Campbell) Fendall is a daughter of Peter H. Campbell, who brought his family to Oregon in 1865 and located in Yamhill county. Mr. Fendall well remembers the conditions surrounding pioneer life in this state, when wild game, such as bear and deer, abounded, when improved roads were almost unknown, and the conveniences and luxuries of modern life were not even dreamed of. Arthur E. Fendall attended the public schools, graduating from the high school at Corvallis, after which he came to Portland and entered the employ of the Hazelwood Company, with which he remained for five years. He then became assistant credit manager for the Fleishner-Mayer Company, which position he held until 1922, when he acquired an interest in the Barker Bread Company, of which he became secretary and manager in 1924. This company was established in 1921 by H. D. Anderson, and is now owned by W. R. Bowles and Mr. Fendall, the former being president of the company. The plant, one story in height with a mezzanine floor, is one hundred and twenty by one hundred and ten feet in dimensions and is in every respect modern in its equipment. The bread is baked by the continuous conveying system and the oven, sixty-five by nine feet in size, is heated by gas. It is thermostatic heat and humidity controlled and has a capacity of twenty-four thousand loaves of bread a day. The company has fifty-two employees and uses eighteen delivery wagons, supplying bread to dealers throughout the city and vicinity. He is also interested financially in several other local enterprises. In 1922 Mr. Fendall was united in marriage to Miss Gladys Ramsay, of Portland, and they have one child, Ramsay. Mr. Fendall is a democrat in his political views and is a member of the Portland Chamber of Commerce and the Progressive Business Men's Club. He possesses marked executive ability and his business record has gained for him the respect and esteem of all who know him.
