Clarke Publishing Company ARTHUR L. FIELDS, president of the Fields Motor Car Company, of Portland, enjoys the distinction of having the oldest Chevrolet agency on the Pacific coast and of having sold more automobiles in Multnomah county than any other dealer. He was born in Portland on the 28th day of February, 1887, and is a son of L. R. and Lillie M. (Hosford) Fields. His father was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and came to Portland in 1875. Until his retirement in 1914, he was in the employ of the Southern Pacific Railroad, having been superintendent of the Oregon division when he quit the service. His death occurred in 1924. The mother was born in Scio, Oregon, and still resides in Portland. Her father, Rev. C. 0. Hosford, came to the coast in 1848 and was a pioneer circuit rider of the Methodist Episcopal church. Arthur L. Fields received his elementary education in the public schools of Portland and attended Leland Stanford University two years. He was for awhile in the Bank of California, was later with the Lumberman's National Bank for three years, and then engaged in the collection business, which he followed for four years. In August, 1916, he became associated with Leroy R. Fields and A. W. Regner and organized the firm of Regner & Fields, which took the local agency for the Ford cars. In February, 1917, they took the Chevrolet agency for Multnomah county, which they have retained to the present time. In 1919 the business was reorganized as the Fields Motor Car Company, of which Leroy R. Fields was president; and Arthur L. Fields, vice president. Arthur L. Fields became president upon the death of Leroy R. Fields in 1927. The business was first located on Grand avenue, between Ankeny and Burnside streets, was later on Fourteenth and Alder streets for five years, then on Sixteenth and Alder streets for three and a half years, and in the present year came to the splendid building which it now occupies at Grand and Couch streets, where it has a half block of ground. Since taking over the Chevrolet agency Mr. Fields has sold between thirteen and fourteen thousand new cars in Multnomah county and an equal number of used cars. He employs more than fifty people and, in addition to his well arranged office and attractive showroom, has a large and well equipped repair and parts department, in which efficient and prompt service is rendered by a corps of skilled mechanics. In 1912 Mr. Fields was united in marriage to Miss Amy Coombe, of San Francisco, California, and they are the parents of three children, namely: Philip L., aged fifteen years; Elinor E., aged nine years, and Harriet C., aged six years. The republican party receives Mr. Fields' support and he has proven a good citizen in everything pertaining to the welfare and prosperity of his city and county. He is a member of Washington Lodge, No. 46, A. F. & A. M.; Oregon Consistory, No. 1, A. A. S. R.; Al Kader Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S.; the Kappa Sigma fraternity, the University Club, the Waverly Golf Club, the Portland Hunt Club, of which he is president, the Chamber of Commerce, of which he is a member of the resignation committee, and the East Side Business Men's Club. He is a man of high business ideals, to which he closely adheres, and is energetic and progressive in his methods. The success which has crowned his efforts has been well merited, so that throughout the city and county in which he lives he commands uniform respect and esteem.
