J. Clarke Publishing Company In connection with the transportation interests of Portland, C. A. (Bill) Finger has become a prominent figure, being president of the Oregon Forwarding Company, which has become one of the most important and successful concerns in its line here. He was born in Portland on the 30th of June, 1895, is a son of A. S. and Grace (Painter) Finger, and a scion of old pioneer stock, his paternal grandfather, Samuel Finger, having brought his family here, by way of Cape Horn, in an early day, while his maternal grandfather, Jackson W. Painter, came across the plains with his family many years ago. Mr. Finger's parents were married here and his father is now engaged in the furniture business in Portland. C. A. Finger attended the public schools, graduating from high school, after which he learned the printing trade, at which he was employed a few years. He worked for the local telephone company, and later for the Union Pacific Railroad, after which he was connected with the grain exporting business until 1917, when he enlisted for service in the World war. He became a member of the One Hundred and Sixty-second Infantry Regiment and, after a period of training, was sent overseas, where he served for twenty-two months. On his return home he was honorably discharged, after which he reentered the employ of Max Houser, grain dealer. Later he became identified with the shipping business as an employee of the Oregon Pacific Company, with which he remained until 1925, when he organized the Oregon Forwarding Company, of which he became president, in which capacity he is still serving. He has devoted his efforts tirelessly to the interests of this company, in which he has met with a gratifying measure of success. In 1926 Mr. Finger acquired an interest in the Oregon Stevedoring Company, of which he has since been president, and he is also a director of the Oceanic Terminals. In January, 1923, Mr. Finger was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Ann DeGidio, of Portland, and they are the parents of a son, William, who is now three years of age. Mr. Finger is a member of the Gyro International, the Multnomah Athletic Club, the Multnomah Golf Club and the Portland Chamber of Commerce. He has shown a deep interest in public affairs and gives his political support to the republican party. He is essentially a self-made man, his success having been attained through his persistence, determination and initiative, backed by sound judgment and honorable business methods, and today he commands the sincere respect of all who have had dealings with him, while in social circles he is deservedly popular, because of a cordial and unaffected manner.
