Clarke Publishing Company J. W. FOWLER. With efficiency as his watchword, J. W. Fowler has steadily progressed toward the goal of success and is now an influential factor in the control of one of the large lumber corporations of Portland. A native of New York state, he was born in 1872 and when a child was taken to Minnesota by his parents, James and Isabella Fowler, who settled in St. Paul. The father was a prominent contractor, who later went to Wisconsin. In the public schools of St. Paul, J. W. Fowler obtained his early education and continued his studies in Macalester College of Minnesota. In Hayward, Wisconsin, he entered the employ of the John C. Hill Company, composed of John C. Hill, R. L. McCormick and Frederick Weyerhaeuser, lumbermen of national repute, and remained with the firm for four years. Afterward Mr. Fowler was associated with John C. Hill in the lumber business for a few years and next engaged in ranching for a short time. At Ashland, Wisconsin, he was identified with the Duncan-Brewer Company and in 1903 came to Portland as manager of the Peninsula Lumber Company. He acted in that capacity until 1907, when the business was sold, and then became superintendent of the Eastern & Western Lumber Company. Mr. Fowler still fills that im¬portant position and since 1923 has been one of the vice presidents of the cororation. He is in charge of the logging and manufacturing departments and gives to the firm the services of an expert. The company specializes in the manufacture of fir lumber and conducts an extensive business, shipping the output of its plant to points throughout the United States and also to foreign lands. Mr. Fowler married Miss Gertrude Blanding, of St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, and they have become the parents of two children: Florence, who was graduated from Reed College and is now a member of the faculty of a select school conducted by Mrs. Lucy Ramberg at Florence, Italy; and Worth B., a high school pupil. Mr. Fowler is affiliated with the Masonic order and the Alderwood Golf Club. In politics he is a stanch republican but has never sought office as a reward for party fealty. His interest centers in his work, and his industry, ability and fidelity to duty are well known to Portland's citizens, who entertain for him high regard.
