The Steel Tank and Pipe Company, of Portland, has grown to be one of the important industrial concerns of this section of the state and its president, T. L. Hanning, has gained a reputation as a man of sagacity and dependable judgment. This business was first established as the Portland Brazing and Machine Works, at Third and Glisan streets, in 1907, by Fred Robbins. This was later reorganized as the West Coast Iron and Steel Works, and in 1924 was again reorganized under the present title, and the officers now are, T. L. Hanning, president; George Dierking, vice president; R. T. Wetteland, secretary; and John Stevenson, treasurer. The plant, which is located on Columbia boulevard, was completed in the spring of 1925. The company here has fifteen acres of ground, of which the buildings cover five acres. The products consist mainly of steel tanks and pipes, which are sold to cities and oil companies, and they also specialize in welded products in steel. About sixty men are employed, and the company does a business of over a half million dollars annually. T. L. Hanning was born in Yamhill county, Oregon, in 1887, and is a son of R. W. and Sarah (Davis) Hanning. His mother, who was a native of Oregon, was a daughter of Thomas Davis, who was one of the pioneers of this state. R. W. Hanning was born in Scotland, from which country he came to the United States in 1875, locating in Oregon, where he was for many years engaged in farming, in which he met with very satisfactory success, so that he is now retired from active affairs. T. L. Hanning received a public school education and then went to work for the Pacific Bridge Company, for which he was engaged in construction work for twelve years, and during that period gained much valuable practical experience. In 1915 he bought an interest in the business with which he is now identified, and in 1920 Mr. Robbins sold his interest. Mr. Hanning has been president from the time of his entry into the company and has devoted himself tirelessly to its interests. In 1911 Mr. Hanning was united in marriage to Miss Gertrude Brace, of Portland, and to them has been born a daughter, Rosemary. The republican party receives Mr. Hanning's political allegiance and fraternally he is a member of Oregon Lodge, No. 101, A. F. & A. M.; Oregon Consistory No. 1, A. A. S. R.; and Al Kader Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S. He also belongs to the Columbia Country Club and the Chamber of Commerce.
