Clarke Publishing Company Author: History of the Columbia River Valley From The Dalles to the Sea, Vol. III, Published 1928, Pages 273 - 274 J. AMBROSE HASELTINE. One of the largest and most important business enterprises in its line in the northwest is that of J. E. Haseltine & Company, of Portland, dealers in heavy hardware, iron and steel, automobile equipment, shop supplies, hardwood lumber, paints and oils, which business has been in continuous existence for forty-five years. Back of the marked success which this concern has enjoyed has been its record of square dealing and progressive methods, and it is regarded as one of this city's most reliable business houses. The company had its genesis in 1883, when J. E. Haseltine, who had come to this city in 1882, bought a third interest in the business of E. J. Northrup & Company, dealers in blacksmith supplies, who had been in business here since 1856. J. E. Haseltine was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and at Portland, Maine, engaged in the same line of business which he later followed in Portland, Oregon, where the family arrived on the 9th of October, 1882. At that time his son, J. Ambrose Haseltine immediately began work as a delivery boy for J. K. Gill & Company, dealers in books, stationery, etc. Soon afterward J. E. Haseltine bought an interest in E. J. Northrup & Company. This was early in the year 1883 and some months later Mr. Northrup accidently fell and was killed. Mr. Haseltine then bought out the business which he continued as a partnership concern under the name of J. E. Haseltine & Company, until 1897 when it was incorporated with J. E. Haseltine as president and J. Ambrose Haseltine, vice president and manager. On the death of the father in 1921, when he was eighty-seven years of age, J. Ambrose Haseltine became president and continued as manager which position he still holds, while his son, William A. Haseltine succeeded him as vice president. The firm conducts a wholesale and retail business and has met with well deserved success. W. D. Allard is serving as secretary of the corporation. Ten traveling salesmen cover Oregon, Washington and Idaho, and there are about thirty-five people on the payroll. The company is the sole representative in this territory for many of the lines which it carries and has always enjoyed a high reputation for its sound and dependable business policy. J. Ambrose (Amby) Haseltine was born in Portland, Maine, and accompanied his parents on their removal to Portland, Oregon. He has been connected with the business continuously from the time his father entered it in 1883, and since the latter's death has served as president. His mother, whose maiden name was Mary Elizabeth Knox, was born at Sandberton, New Hampshire, and passed away in 1917, at the age of eighty-three years. She and her husband always took a keen interest in everything pertaining to the civic welfare of their adopted city and were numbered among Portland's most highly respected citizens J. Ambrose Haseltine was united in marriage to Miss Zaidee Peeples, a native of California, whose parents removed to that state from the east. Mr. and Mrs. Haseltine have a son, William A., who was born, reared and educated in Portland and is now vice president of the company. He is a Mason, in which order he has received the degrees of the York Rite, and is a Noble of the Mystic Shrine. He married Miss Clara Scharp and they have two children, Jimmie and Billie. J. A. Haseltine is also a York Rite Mason and Shriner, a member of the Knights of Pythias, the Auld Lang Syne Club and the Chamber of Commerce, his father having been a member of the original building committee, and he and his son are life members of the Multnomah Athletic Club. Mr. Haseltine possesses those substantial qualities which are so essential in successful business today and commands the uniform regard and confidence of all who know him.
