Clarke Publishing Company MILLARD C. HOLBROOK, who for nearly twenty-five years was numbered among the leading dentists of Portland, is now extensively engaged in the real estate business, in which he is meeting with a large measure of success. Mr. Holbrook was born in Portland on the 1st of September, 1876, and is a son of Philo and Hannah (Wilson) Holbrook. His father, who was born in Seymour, Connecticut, came to Oregon, by way of Cape Horn, in 1860 and settled at The Dalles. He came of a seafaring family that was established in this country in an early day, three brothers of the name having settled along the Atlantic coast prior to the war of the Revolution, in which conflict several members of the family participated. Philo Holbrook was prominent in the early affairs of Oregon, having been the first registered pilot on the upper Columbia river. He served for sixteen years as a county commissioner and was a strong and effective advocate of good roads. His wife, who was born on the plains while her parents were en route to Oregon in 1849, was a daughter of Samuel Wilson, who was an Indian war veteran and was wounded in the battle at Chambers Prairie, on Puget sound. He was a farmer near Holbrook, was also the owner of a store and served as postmaster. Millard C. Holbrook received his early education in the public schools of Portland, graduating from high school, after which he attended the medical school of the University of Oregon. Deciding to make dentistry his life work, he entered the Philadelphia Dental College and was graduated with the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1900. He engaged in practice in Portland, also operating an X-ray department, and gained distinction as an able and skilled operator. In 1923 Dr. Holbrook retired from the dental profession and turned his attention to real estate promotions, in connection with which he became associated with J. A. Charlesworth, of Charlesworth & Company. They have been very active in this line of effort, in which they have been notably successful. Dr. Holbrook promoted and was associate fiscal agent for the Medical Arts building, which is eight stories high, covers a half block of ground and cost a million dollars; with Charlesworth he promoted the Portland theater, costing one and a quarter million dollars, and the New Heathman hotel, which cost four hundred and fifty thousand dollars. In all of his operations Mr. Holbrook has shown business sagacity and sound judgment which stamps him as a man of unusual ability, and the success which is crowning his efforts is also contributing in a very definite measure to the upbuilding and development of his city. He is secretary of Portland Paramount Corporation, president of the Holbrook Estate and second vice president of the Fidelity Savings and Loan Association. On October 31, 1906, in Portland, Mr. Holbrook was united in marriage to Miss Edna Jeffery, who was born and reared in this city and is a daughter of E. J. and Nautilla (King) Jeffery. Her father was born in New York in 1835, came to Portland in 1852 and served as sheriff of Multnomah county at one time. Her mother, who was born in Portland in 1850, was a daughter of Amos King, who owned a donation land claim covering what is now the city park, in Portland, which comprises a large part of the hills west of the city. Mr. and Mrs. Holbrook are the parents of two children. Jane, born September 4, 1907, is a student in the University of Oregon, and Jeffery, born February 27, 1914, is attending the public schools. Mr. Holbrook is a veteran of the Spanish-American war, in which he was a corporal and served fourteen months in the Philippines. Two of his brothers also served there at the same time, Philo, Jr., who later became county surveyor and county commissioner of Multnomah county, and Samuel, who served as deputy county assessor. They also have two sisters, Mrs. Emily Gaylord and Mrs. Helen Watts, both of whom reside in Portland. Dr. Holbrook is a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; the Royal Arcanum, of which he is a past grand regent; the Spanish-American War Veterans; the Multnomah Athletic Club, of which he is a life member; the Portland District Dental Society; the Oregon State Dental Society, of which he is a past president. Mr. Holbrook is much interested in athletics, outdoor sport, hunting and fishing. He was an early football star of the Willamette Club and was one of the committee that pioneered municipal golf in Portland. It was largely through his efforts that the Seaside Golf course was built, hewn out of rough land, timber and rock, and fronting the ocean, the property being the site of the famous old Seaside Hotel, which was destroyed by fire. He is a man of great force of character and an attractive personality and all who know him hold him in the highest regard.
