Clarke Publishing Company ARCHBISHOP EDWARD D. HOWARD. Few men of his years have been accorded the honor and distinction — worthily won — that has come to Edward D. Howard in his advancement to the archbishopric of the Oregon City Archdiocese in Oregon. Residing in Portland, he is from this point directing the labors of the ecclesiastical organization which has been developed in the state, and his love of humanity and his deep and unfaltering devotion and consecration to his work have been the basic elements of the splendid results achieved. He has here continued his labors uninterruptedly since August, 1926. His life story had its beginning in Cresco, Iowa, his natal day being November 5, 1877. His parents were John and Marie (Fleming) Howard, the father devoting his life to the occupation of farming. The son Edward was born and reared on his father's farm and his early education was acquired in the public schools of his native state. Subsequently he continued his studies in the preparatory department of Columbia College at Dubuque, Iowa, and next entered St. Mary's College at St. Mary's, Kansas. In further preparation for holy orders he then enrolled as a student in St. Paul Seminary at St. Paul, Minnesota, from which he was graduated and ordained to the priesthood on the 12th of June, 1906. In September of the same year Archbishop Howard became a faculty member of Columbia College at Dubuque, Iowa, in which he first filled the chair of Latin and Greek, while later he served as prefect of studies and dean of the college, becoming president of that institution in 1921 and continuing at its head until consecrated a bishop on the 8th of April, 1924. His pronounced ability as an educator is well demonstrated in the fact that during the eighteen years of his connection with Columbia College he rose from a professorship to the presidency and under his guidance the school grew and developed, becoming one of the strong institutions of learning of the Catholic church in the middle west. He retired from the presidency of Columbia to accept the position of auxiliary bishop of the Davenport (Iowa) diocese and there continued his labors until April, 1926, when he was appointed archibishop of the Oregon city diocese, with headquarters in Portland. In August of that year he assumed the duties of this high office, succeeding the late Archbishop Christie. His life, strong and purposeful, actuated by the highest ideals of service to mankind, has indeed been a contributing factor to the growth of the Roman Catholic church, as well as a most beneficial influence among those with whom he has been brought in contact. His Grace has always manifested an active and helpful interest in civic affairs of Portland and lends the weight of his influence in support of all projects looking toward the growth and development of his adopted state. He is a member of the board of the Red Cross Chapter of the Portland Chamber of Commerce and the Arlington Club. One of the outstanding prelates of this part of the country, his record constitutes an important chapter in church annals. Assuming his diocesan duties here, he has closely studied the situation and its possibilities and is laboring along constructive lines that are manifest in the continued growth and development of the church.
