The oldest physician in Gresham, Oregon, in point of years of service is Dr. H. H. Hughes, who has proven an able and reliable practitioner and commands a large practice throughout this section of Multnomah county. The Doctor was born at Macon, Missouri, in 1882, and is a son of Mrs. Alida (Pixley) Hughes, who now lives in Gresham. The family moved to Butte, Montana, in 1887 and in the public schools of that city he began his education, continuing his studies in the schools of Missoula, where the family located in 1895. Later he entered the University of Montana and was graduated in 1905, after which he was employed at farm work for a short time. He then matriculated in Rush Medical College, Chicago, Illinois, from which he was graduated with the degree of Doctor a Medicine in 1911. He served as interne in the Good Samaritan hospital, at Portland, Oregon, and in 1912 opened an office in Gresham, where he has practiced to the present time. In 1927 Dr. Hughes was united in marriage to Miss Katherine Howey, who was born in North Dakota, and is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Howey, who now reside in Gresham. The Doctor is a member of the American Legion, the Portland City and County Medical Society and the Oregon State Medical Society, and is now serving as city health officer of Gresham. The Doctor is a veteran of the World war, having served as a first lieutenant in the Medical Corps. He was in France about six months, during which period he had charge of an evacuation ambulance company, which saw much active service, and he also had some hospital service. He is a man of earnest purpose, high ideals and close devotion to his profession, and during the years of his residence in Gresham has earned the uniform confidence and respect of the people, while, socially, he has made many warm and loyal friends.
