Clarke Publishing Company WILLIAM E. HUNT, who is rendering able and effective service as assistant general freight agent for the Great Northern Railroad at Portland, has had many years of practical experience in this line of work, and is held in high regard by all who are associated with him. Mr. Hunt was born in Virginia in 1877 and is a son of John P. and Sadie E. (Boyd) Hunt. The family moved to Missouri in 1880 and there his father engaged in the lumber business. Both parents are now deceased. William E. Hunt attended the public schools of Missouri, after which he was employed at various occupations for several years. He then entered the State Normal School, from which he was graduated, and later he taught school one year. In 1900, when twenty-three years of age, he entered the employ of the traffic department of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad and was stationed successively at Chillicothe, Hannibal and St. Louis, Missouri. He was made a traveling freight agent and after the Burlington road was merged with the Hill system he went with the Great Northern at St. Louis. In 1911 he was sent to Cincinnati, Ohio, as general agent for the Great Northern, remaining there until 1916, when he was transferred to Great Falls, Montana, as general agent, and during the war period he served as general agent for the Great Northern at Wenatchee, Washington. In 1919 Mr. Hunt was made assistant general freight agent of the Great Northern at Portland, and is still serving in that capacity, having charge of the Oregon and southern Washington district. In 1910 Mr. Hunt was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Thorne Grace, of Chillicothe, Missouri, and they have one child, William E., Jr. Mr. Hunt gives his political support to the republican party. He is a Royal Arch Mason, a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and the Chamber of Commerce. In the discharge of his official duties he has shown a progressive spirit that has enabled him to give to his company a high type of service and he is regarded as one of its valuable employees. He possesses a cordial and friendly manner that makes a favorable impression on all with whom he comes in contact and he is deservedly popular wherever known.
