Clarke Publishing Company HENRY JENNING. Among Portland's well known business men is Henry Jenning, secretary and treasurer of the old established retail furniture house of Henry Jenning & Sons. He has been identified with the business from boyhood and has shown himself an energetic, capable and reliable man. Mr. Jenning was born in Portland in 1882 and is a son of Henry and Barbara (Opal) Jenning, who are referred to at length in the sketch of Mr. Jenning's brother, Frederick O. Jenning, elsewhere in this work. Henry Jenning attended the public schools of Portland, graduating from high school, and then took the commercial course in the Portland Business College. When sixteen years of age he entered his father's business, his first work being that of driver of a wagon, later as collector, after which he worked in every department of the store, thus acquiring an intimate familiarity with every detail of the business. On the incorporation of the business as Henry Jenning & Sons he was made treasurer of the company and on the death of his father, in 1913, he also became secretary and has held both offices to the present time. He has devoted his attention indefatigably to the interests of the company and has been an important factor in the continued prosperity which the firm has enjoyed. On October 4, 1907, Mr. Jenning was united in marriage to Miss Lilah Illidge, of Portland, and they are the parents of a son, Henry, Jr., who is now twelve years of age. Mr. Jenning is a strong republican in his political views and has always shown a live interest in the progress and welfare of Portland. He is a member of the Masonic order, in which he has received the degrees of both the York and Scottish Rites; the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, the Columbia Golf Club and the Portland Chamber of Commerce.
