Clarke Publishing Company CHARLES JENNING, who has served for many years as vice president of Henry Jenning & Sons, one of the best known business concerns of Portland, is a veteran in the retail furniture trade, having begun his connection with his father's establishment in boyhood, and during the subsequent years he has been a large factor in the successful operation of the business. Mr. Jenning was born in Portland, March 16, 1881, and is a son of Henry. Sr., and Barbara (Opal) Jenning, to whom further reference is made in the sketch of Mr. Jenning's brother, Frederick O. Jenning, on other pages of this work. He received his educational training in the public and high schools and the Portland Business College, and on his graduation from the latter institution he joined his father and brothers in the furniture business. Beginning as a truck driver, he worked through every department of the business, which he learned thoroughly, so that on the incorporation of the company, when he was made vice president, he was well qualified to assume a part of the burden of management and has continued to give close attention to the business. In 1906 Mr. Jenning was united in marriage to Miss Ida Van Hoy, of Goldendale, Washington. In his political views he has always been aligned with the republican party and has shown a keen interest in public affairs. He is a member of Hawthorn Lodge, No. 111, A. F. & A. M.; Portland Consistory, A. A. S. R.; Al Kader Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S., and Portland Lodge, No. 142, B. P. O. E. He also belongs to the Chamber of Commerce and the Alderwood Golf Club.
