Wakley iwakley@msn.com January 3, 2010, 1:08 pm Source: History of the Columbia River Valley From The Dalles to the Sea, Vol. III, Published 1928, Pages 259 - 260 Author: The S. J. Clarke Publishing Company J. E. KENNEDY, a member of the firm of Schlesser Brothers, representatives of the meat industry in Portland, is a native of the Columbia River valley and has spent the greater part of his life in agricultural and mercantile pursuits, but is now devoting his attention to the present business, which is one of the community's prosperous and growing industries. Mr. Kennedy was born in Wasco county, Oregon, in 1874 and is a son of Michael and Sarah (Miller) Kennedy. His parents came to this state in 1860 and located near Portland, where they lived for twelve years, after which they went to Wasco county, where the father took up a homestead, which he improved and developed into a good farm. There he lived for many years, but is now retired and lives at Wamic, Wasco county. J. E. Kennedy received a good public school education and took a course in the Portland Business College. He then turned his attention to stock raising, and also ran a store, in both of which lines he was successful, carrying on the business until 1926, when he sold out and, coming to Portland, bought an interest in the firm of Schlesser Brothers, of which concern more extended mention appears elsewhere in this publication. This has been developed into an important business, the choice parts of the meat being exported, while the remainder is made into fertilizers and chicken feed. Mr. Kennedy was united in marriage to Miss Mamie A. Driver of The Dalles, daughter of J. F. Driver and a niece of Rev. Driver, they have a daughter, Lucile. Mr. Kennedy is a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and the United Artisans Life Association. A man of good business judgment and a strong personality, he makes a favorable impression on all with whom he comes in contact and is numbered among the successful business men of Portland.
