J. Clarke Publishing Company Prominent on the list of the able physicians and skilled surgeons of Portland stands the name of Dr. Thomas W. Kirby, who has been engaged in the active practice of his profession here for over twenty years, during which time he has risen steadily in public esteem, due to his uniform success and his sterling qualities. Dr. Kirby was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1867, and is a son of William and Elizabeth (Wolfenden) Kirby, the former a native of England and the latter of Canada, in which country they were married. They became the parents of four sons and five daughters. Thomas W. Kirby completed the course of the public and high schools and then entered the medical department of Toronto University, from which he was graduated with the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1895. He served one year as interne in the Toronto General Hospital, and later practiced ten years at Sault Ste Marie, Michigan, and spent two years in Guy's Hospital in London, England. In 1907 he located in Portland, where he has since been engaged in the practice of his profession, specializing in surgery, in which he is widely regarded as an expert. In 1898, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, Dr. Kirby was united in marriage to Miss Violet Chisholm, who is a native of Canada, and they have a daughter, Elizabeth Margaret, who completed her education in the University of Oregon. Dr. Kirby is a member of the Portland Academy of Medicine, the Multnomah County Medical Society, the Oregon State Medical Society, and the American Medical Association and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Scotland. He is a man of earnest purpose, upright life and attractive personality and no resident of Portland commands to a greater degree than he the confidence and respect of the people.
