Clarke Publishing Company LOUIS C. KRAMER. One of Portland's most enterprising and successful business men is Louis C. Kramer, who is doing a large importing and exporting business, in which he has attained notable success. He was born in Germany on the 16th of May, 1871, and is a son of Conrad and Tuliana Kramer, who were natives and lifelong residents of that country, both now deceased. Louis C. Kramer received the advantage of a good public school education in his native country and there engaged in the exporting and importing business. Desiring a better opportunity for advancement, he came to the United States in 1907, locating first in New York city, where for two years he was connected with the John Wanamaker store. He then went to Atlanta, Georgia, and entered the employ of the Cudahy Packing Company, becoming manager for North Carolina and South Carolina, which position he filled for two years. In 1911 Mr. Kramer came to Portland, and for three years he was employed as buyer for the Swift Packing Company. In 1914 he embarked in business on his own account as an importer and exporter, specializing in draperies and trimmings and building up a splendid business. He sells to the larger merchants throughout the western states and as far east as Chicago, being one of the few importers who sell to the middle west from the Pacific coast. He keeps from six to eight traveling representatives on the road and does much outside selling himself, traveling much of the time. He thoroughly understands every detail of the business, and his experience, courtesy, accommodation and honorable methods have firmly established him in the confidence of all who have had dealings with him. In 1894, in Germany, Mr. Kramer was united in marriage to Miss Martha Doering, who was born and reared in that country. They are the parents of a son, Otto, who was graduated from high school and from the University of Oregon, and is now connected with the Oregon Worsted Company, as manager of its branch office and factory at San Francisco, California. He married Miss Alma Gruenig, of Portland, and they have two children, Otto and Roy. Mr. Kramer gives his political support to the republican party and has shown a good citizen's interest in the welfare and prosperity of his city. He is a member of the Kiwanis Club and the Chamber of Commerce. As he has prospered in material affairs, he has wisely invested in real estate and is now the owner of valuable business and residence properties in Portland. He has a very attractive and comfortable residence in the city and a pleasant summer home at Oswego. He possesses a pleasing personality, readily makes friends, and throughout the range of his extensive acquaintance is held in high esteem, while in business circles he is regarded as a solid and substantial man, well worthy of the success which is crowning his efforts.
