Clarke Publishing Company GUNTHER FREDERICK KRAUSE. Among Portland's able lawyers and highly respected citizens stands Gunther F. Krause, who is regarded as a leader in his special field of practice, that of maritime law, in which he is meeting with a very gratifying measure of success. A native of Portland, he was born on the 12th day of July, 1895, a son of August and Bertha (Peisel) Krause. His father was born in Liegnitz, Silesia, Germany, February 4, 1861, and was there reared and educated. In 1887 he came to the United States, locating in Tacoma, Washington, where he lived for three years. He is a minister of the Evangelical Lutheran church and since 1890 has served continuously as pastor of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran church, at East Twelfth and Clinton streets, Portland, a period of thirty-eight years. He plans to retire from the active ministry in the present year. In 1893, in Chicago, Illinois, he married Miss Bertha Peisel, who was born in Bischofswerda, Saxony, Germany, March 31, 1867. They had been sweethearts in their native country and she came to this country to become his wife. Her death occurred in 1928. They had four children, namely: Helmeth Edward, born March 7, 1894, graduated from Reed College, in Portland, and received the degree of Bachelor of Laws from the Law school of New York University, after which he engaged in the practice of his profession in that city. He enlisted for service in the World war and became a band leader, but was not ordered overseas. Roland Ernest, born August 29, 1897, had two years in Reed College, then enlisted in the United States navy and was engaged in transport service during the World war, after which he remained in the navy and is now a lieutenant on the United States cruiser "Omaha." Gertrude Anna, born April 22, 1903, graduated from Reed College with the degree of Bachelor of Arts, and is now a teacher in the Portland high school. Gunther F. Krause the second of the family received his early education in the public schools of Portland, graduating from Stevens grammar school in 1909 and from Washington high school in 1913. He entered Reed College and won the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1917, after which he served for two years as principal of the high school at Cathlamet, Oregon. He then entered the law school of Columbia University, New York, from which he was graduated, with the degree of Bachelor of Laws, in 1922, and in the same year was admitted to the bar at Portland. He engaged in the practice of his profession in association with the firm of Wood, Montague & Matthiessen, one of the leading law firms of this city, and he has built up a large clientele, gaining a wide reputation for his ability both as a trial lawyer and as office counselor. On September 9, 1920, in Portland, Mr. Krause was united in marriage to Miss Hedwig Elsie Haehlen, who was born in this city June 23, 1895, and is a daughter of Gottlieb and Hermine Haehlen, the former born in Switzerland and the latter in Germany, on June 21, 1877. Mrs. Krause is a proficient player of piano and pipe organ, and formerly did much work as church organist. Mr. and Mrs. Krause are the parents of three children: Donald, born July 4, 1921, Dorothea, February 19, 1923, and Edward, May 30, 1926. Mr. Krause is a member of the Multnomah County Bar Association, the Oregon State Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Maritime Law Association of the United States. He is a man of upright character, attractive personality and agreeable manner and all who know him hold him in high esteem.
