J. Clarke Publishing Company Probably no city in the country has a wider diversity of useful and valuable products than has Portland, and among those of particular worth is "Lange's Mineral Wonder," which is made and sold by F. W. Lange, who is meeting with very gratifying success. This business was established in June, 1910, by Mr. Lange and his father, under the firm name of H. W. Lange & Son, who began the preparation of certain mineral salts, containing principally sulphur and iron, to be used as a tonic for the human body. The compound was so successful in its results that during the subsequent years it has had a tremendous growth in popularity and is now sold throughout the United States and Mexico. The remedy contains elemental mineral ingredients only, its great beneficial qualities being due wholly to its remarkable chemical affinity for the blood, because of which it is claimed to be specific for the maintenance of the blood in its original purity, so that it is said to be clearly indicated in cases of anaemia. The material from which this remedy is made comes from about ninety miles west of Great Falls, Montana, where the salts are mined. They are shipped to the plant laboratory in Portland, where they are boiled down and crystallized, this process being repeated until all impurities are removed, the result being sulphur, in the form of soluble sulphur salt, and iron in the form of an oxide, both of which are ground and dried, in which form it is marketed. In use it is mixed with the proper proportion of water. The business is conducted from the Portland office, at 231 Main street, and is wholesale only. The company owns the mines from which the raw materials are produced. Mr. Lange in recommending and selling the remedy has always emphasized the statement that it is not a "cure-all," but a beneficial and helpful tonic. It is his intention to change the name of the compound to "Lange's Mineral Remedy." F. W. Lange was born in New York city in 1876 and is a son of H. W. and Doris (MacDonald) Lange. His father was born in New York city, March 12, 1849, and died in 1915. In 1876 he went to Montana as a pioneer, locating on the Sun river, forty-seven miles west of Great Falls, where he took up a homestead. At that time that section of country was full of buffaloes. Indian troubles were frequent, at which times the family took refuge at Fort Shaw, which was nineteen miles east of their home. They lived on the homestead until 1908, when they moved to Coeur d'Alene, and two years later they came to Portland and began the exploitation of the minerals referred to in the preceding paragraph, to which the father devoted the last five years of his life. He was married in New York in 1875, his wife being a native of that city. F. W. Lange was about four months old when taken by his parents to their frontier home in Montana, and he has a distinct recollection of the Indian scares which occasionally lent variety to their lives. He attended the public schools of Great Falls and had two years in the medical school of Northwestern University, at Evanston, Illinois. On the death of his mother, in 1897, he laid aside his textbooks and returned to the home ranch, where he assisted his father, with whom he was associated until the latter's death, and during the past eighteen years he has devoted his attention to his remedy manufacturing interests. In 1911, in Portland, Mr. Lange was united in marriage to Miss Margaret M. Miller, who was born and reared at Great Falls, Montana, and to them has been born a son, Fred W., who is now attending high school. Mr. Lange is a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and the Portland Chamber of Commerce. He has won high regard because he is a man of sincere purpose, straightforward manner and honorable business methods.
