J. Clarke Publishing Company No line of business is more worthy of one’s best effort than is that of life insurance, for from the economic and humanitarian viewpoints alone none is of more vital importance to the average American home. So he who sells life insurance is performing a real service for those who buy and is contributing to the financial stability of the community. One of the leading life insurance men of the Columbia River Valley is L. F. Larson, of Portland, general agent for the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, having charge of all of its agencies throughout Oregon. Mr. Larson was born in Galva, Illinois, on the 6th of September, 1880, a son of N. P. and Sophia Larson, the former of whom was engaged in the coal mining business, and both of whom are deceased. He received his elementary education in the public schools and later entered the University of Illinois, from which he was graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1903, receiving his Master's degree from that institution in the following year. On completing his college course he entered the employ of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company at Peoria, Illinois, and soon demonstrated his ability as a solicitor, meeting with such consistent success that in 1916 he was appointed general agent for that company in western Missouri, with headquarters at Kansas City. There his record was an enviable one, showing such outstanding results that, on August 1, 1927, he was transferred to Portland as general agent for the state of Oregon. In this territory he has twenty-five full-time agents, and the volume of business of his company in this state has shown a substantial increase since his arrival here. In Oregon the Northwestern now has ten thousand two hundred and fifteen policyholders, with insurance to the amount of $31,280,192 in force. In 1927 fifty-six and thirty-six hundredths of the business written was on the lives of old policyholders, and during that period the company paid out $443,587 in death claims. Since it began business in this state the company has paid a total of $5,298,409 to policyholders or their beneficiaries, a record that has given the Northwestern a strong hold on the confidence and good opinion of the people of this state. In 1908 Mr. Larson was united in marriage to Miss Clara Bodinson, of Galva, Illinois, and they are the parents of a daughter, Katherine Louise, who is twelve years of age. Mr. Larson is a Mason, in which order he has attained the rank of a Knight Templar, and is a member of the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, and the Arlington Club. Politically, he is a stanch republican and is a well informed and public-spirited citizen, ready to cooperate in all matters affecting the general welfare of the community. Personally he is cordial and friendly in manner and holds a high place in the esteem of all who have come in contact with him.
