Clarke Publishing Company JOHN K. LEANDER, who is favorably known in automobile circles throughout western Oregon for his success in handling the Studebaker line of cars, is also recognized as one of Portland's progressive and wide-awake business men. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1890, and is a son of John S. and Mary (Kett) Leander, the latter now deceased, while the father still resides in Chicago, where he is identified with the printing business. John K. Leander was given the advantage of a public school education, graduating from high school, after which for a few years he worked for an engineering company. In 1912 he became a salesman for Ford cars in Chicago, but a year later became identified with the Studebaker agency in Chicago, with which he was connected until 1917. He then enlisted for service in the World war, as a private in the 119th Field Artillery. He served until the close of the war, when he was honorably discharged, with the rank of second lieutenant in a machine gun battalion. In January, 1919, he became manager of the Studebaker interests at Denver, Colorado, where he remained until September 13, 1919, when he came to Portland as local manager. He was successful in that capacity and in 1922 he organized the John K. Leander Company, which took over the agency for the Studebaker cars for western Oregon. He now occupies a three- story building, one hundred by one hundred and twenty feet in size, comprising thirty-six thousand square feet of floor space, at 70 North Broadway, and here maintains the general offices and salesrooms. He also has a large and well equipped service and repair station at Nineteenth and Morrison streets, where he utilizes sixty-four thousand square feet of space. He employs ninety-five people and takes a justifiable pride both in the record of the sales department and in the splendid and complete service to Studebaker owners exclusively. In 1922, Mr. Leander was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Sackley, of Chicago, and to them has been born a daughter, Katherine Rita. Mr. Leander is a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, the American Legion, the Waverly Country Club, the Arlington Club and the Chamber of Commerce. Politically, he is independent, voting according to the dictates of his judgment. He is public-spirited in his relation to the affairs of the city, supporting all measures for the promotion of the general welfare, and in all ways has shown himself worthy of the high place which he holds in the esteem of his fellowmen.
