Clarke Publishing Company Author: History of the Columbia River Valley From The Dalles to the Sea, Vol. III, Published 1928, Pagea 270 - 271 THOMAS S. MANN. The Pacific Stoneware Company, of Portland, has enjoyed a prosperous career, due to the superior quality of its products, both as to material and the character of the finished article. There is in pottery a wide field for the use of art, and throughout the history of the world some of the most notable examples of art have been in this form. The Pacific Stoneware Company has given due attention to this phase of its business and with a measure of success that has caused much favorable comment. The company was established in 1890, under the name of the Pacific Pottery Company, by C. W. Borders, Charles Hegele and L. P. R. LaCompte. In 1900 Thomas and T. S. Mann bought out Borders and part of Hegele's interest, and at that time Mr. LaCompte became president and T. S. Mann, secretary. A few years later the Manns bought LaCompte's interest in the business and in 1910 the name of the company was changed to its present form, the Pacific Stoneware Company, at which time also L. W. Scott acquired an interest in the concern. The plant was for many years located at 695 Sherlock avenue, where a small plant is still maintained, and in March, 1928, the company erected a fine new plant at 1945 Peninsula avenue. Here it has two acres of ground, on which stands a substantial brick building, one hundred and sixty-one by one hundred and eight feet in size, in which the company has modern and up-to-date equipment. Its principal products are stone jars and flower pots and it is a noteworthy fact that of the half dozen or more concerns that have started in this line of business in this state, the Pacific is the only one still in active business. Twenty-five persons are employed in the plant and the products are sold all over the northwest. Mr. Mann has devoted his attention very closely to the business, which, under his wise management, has prospered and is now regarded as one of Portland's distinctive institutions. He is justifiably proud of the concern of which he is the head and he has gained a wide reputation as a capable and reliable business man.
