Clarke Publishing Company WILLIAM G. MANNING. The progressive and enterprising spirit so characteristic of the west has marked the career of William G. Manning, president of the Manning Warehouse & Transfer Co., of Portland. He has achieved success and is now numbered among this city's substantial business men. A native of this city he is a son of George F. and Harriet B. (Noonan) Manning. The family was established here by his paternal grandfather, Henry F. Manning, who located here in 1849 and devoted his active years to farming pursuits. George F. Manning was born in Portland and for many years engaged in mercantile pursuits, retiring sometime prior to his death, which occurred in 1913. His wife was a native of county Galway, Ireland, from which country, in 1875, she was brought to Portland in her girlhood and she is still a resident of this city. William G. Manning attended the public schools and then entered St. Michael's College, in this city, from which he was graduated in 1898. He then enlisted for service in the Spanish-American war and at the close of that short but decisive conflict was honorably discharged. In 1899 he went to work in the freight house of the Northern Pacific Railroad, but later went to the Holman Transfer Company, with which he remained until August 1, 1907. He then organized the Overland Transfer Company, of which he was president, and carried on that business successfully until 1911, when he sold and established his present business, under the name of the Manning Ware¬house & Transfer Co., of which he has been the executive head continuously since. The business was first located at Thirteenth and Everett streets, but was later moved to its present location at 403-5-7-9 Hoyt street, where it occupies a seven-story building of mill construction and containing seventy thousand square feet of space. The building is equipped with an automatic sprinkler system and is admirably adapted to the purpose for which it is used. Mr. Manning does a general warehouse business, handling merchandise and household goods, operates seven trucks and employs thirty persons. Mr. Manning was united in marriage to Miss Ann A. Wentz, who was born at The Dalles, Oregon, and they are the parents of two children, Bernice and Richard, the latter a student in the University of Oregon. Mr. Manning is a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and the Alderwood Country Club, while in his political views he is a republican. He gives his close attention to his business, which, under his management, has shown a steady and satisfactory growth and is now one of the leading establishments in its line in Portland.
