     ROBERT E. MANNING, vice president and manager of the Manning Warehouse & 
Transfer Co., of Portland, is a man of energy and executive ability and has 
proven the right man for the position which he is so efficiently filling. He 
was born in Portland on the 18th of June, 1897, and is a son of George F. and 
Harriet B. (Noonan) Manning, mentioned in the sketch of William G. Manning, a 
brother, on other pages of this work. After completing his public school 
course, Mr. Manning attended Christian Brothers College and was graduated in 
1914, after which he entered the employ of his brother, with whom he remained 
two years. During the following four years he had charge of the Idaho branch 
of the H. F. Norton Company, and in 1920, he returned to Portland and became 
connected with the Manning Warehouse & Transfer Co. as vice president and 
manager, in which capacity he is still serving. He is also the Oregon manager 
of the Lawrence Warehouse Company, of San Francisco, California, which concern 
operates seventeen warehouses in the vicinity of Portland.

     Mr. Manning is a republican in his political views and takes a helpful 
interest in public affairs. He is a member of the Benevolent Protective Order 
of Elks and the Knights of Columbus, of which he is a past grand knight and is 
now district deputy. Socially he is a member of the Alderwood Country Club.
