J. Clarke Publishing Company J. A. MATUS is president of the American Copper Works, Inc., which is the leading concern in its line in Portland. It has within the period of three years become widely known because of the high quality of its work and the superiority of its products and is enjoying a steady and substantial growth. The business was established in July, 1925, by J. A. Matus, who is president of the company, Joseph Stenek, treasurer, and J. Van Hoomissen, secretary. The plant occupies a concrete building, fifty by one hundred feet, at 699 Thurman street, and does a general aluminum, brass and copper smithing business. The company engages in the manufacture of general copper, brass, aluminum and monel metal equipments, boilers, coils, kettles, vats, tanks; steam jacketed kettles for candy, jams, syrups, dye works and varnish; stills for benzine, alcohol, turpentine and water; evaporators and vacuum pans for milk condenseries, jam, catsup, chemicals, extracts, sugar, pectin and berry juices; does lead lining, soldering, tinning, brazing and welding, and makes a specialty of general pipe bending and marine work, for all of which it has complete modern equipment and employs none but highly skilled workmen. J. A. Matus was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in April, 1890, and is a son of Wendell and Mary Matus, who still reside in the Quaker city. He obtained a good public school education and learned the coppersmith trade, at which he was employed about six years in his home city. He then started out to gain experience in other places and worked in many of the larger cities of the country, including Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Seattle and San Francisco, and in the fall of 1924 came to Portland and established his permanent residence. In 1925 he organized the American Copper Works, which he incorporated and to the interests of which he has devoted his attention continuously since, gaining a reputation as an able business man of sound judgment, thorough technical knowledge and high principles, and has met with well merited success. He is a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and the Woodmen of the World and in his political attitude is independent, supporting the men and measures that he believes to be for the best interests of the community. Since coming to Portland he has formed a wide acquaintance and has won a large circle of warm friends, who esteem him for what he has accomplished and for his excellent personal qualities.
