J. Clarke Publishing Company Liberally endowed with the qualities of energy and determination, Ward Mayer has made substantial progress toward the goal of success and is now an important factor in business circles of Portland. He was born March 24, 1889, and is a native of Madison, Wisconsin. His parents were Wiley C. and Catherine (Lott) Mayer, of whom the former was sales manager for a large Chicago wholesale grocery house, and both have passed away. Ward Mayer received a public school education and before locating in Oregon had traveled throughout the west, also making a tour of the southwest. In 1913, when twenty-four years of age, he became identified with contracting activities in Tillamook county and in 1921 allied his interests with those of Portland. He is now at the head of the firm of Mayer & McMillan, who have been awarded many contracts, and the rapid growth of the business is an eloquent testimonial to the quality of their work. Their offices are situated in the Pacific building and employment is furnished to about one hundred and fifty men. The business covers railroad and concrete construction and the firm specializes in construction of all kinds for the lumbering industry, sometimes taking logging and milling contracts to facilitate such constructions. The best equipment obtainable facilitates the work, every detail of which is closely supervised, and the business is conducted with system and efficiency. In 1912 Mr. Mayer was united in marriage to Miss Marjorie Laird Hineline, of Beloit, Wisconsin, and they have become the parents of three children: Kathryn, Marjorie and Richard. Mr. Mayer is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Knights of Pythias, while in politics he is a republicon. Through the exercise of his powers of organization and administration he has created a business of direct value to Portland and the surrounding district and occupies a high place in the esteem of his fellow citizens.
