Clarke Publishing Company CHARLES S. McGILL. One of the oldest mercantile houses at St. Johns, Portland, is that of the St. Johns Hardware Company, which is owned by Charles S. McGill and William R. Evens. Mr. McGill has had many years of practical experience in the hardware business, has followed progressive methods, has adhered to the spirit of the Golden Rule and has therefore enjoyed prosperity. He was born at Fargo, North Dakota, on the 16th of May, 1884, and is a son of Charles A. and Mary McGill. His parents were early settlers of that state and on his arrival there the father took up a homestead, which he developed into a productive and valuable farm. In his later years he retired and located in Fargo, where he lived until 1898, when he brought his family to Portland, and here spent his remaining years, engaging in the restaurant business about a year prior to his death, which occurred in February, 1923. He is survived by his widow, who still resides in this city. Charles S. McGill received his educational training in the public schools of West Superior and Portland, having been about fourteen years of age when the family came here. He entered the employ of the Marshall-Wells Hardware Company as a salesman, remaining with that concern for six and a half years, and in 1908 came to St. Johns, where in partnership with William R. Evens, he bought the hardware business of Potter & Gould, at which time the style of the firm was changed to that of the St. Johns Hardware Company. They carry a large and well selected stock of shelf and heavy hardware, implements, stoves and auxiliary lines, and during the score of years that they have conducted the business have enjoyed a large patronage throughout this locality. In 1911 Mr. McGill was united in marriage to Miss Genevieve Brodahl, of St. Johns, and they are the parents of two children, Donald and Dorothy. The republican party receives Mr. McGill's support and he has at all times shown a commendable interest in matters affecting the welfare and prosperity of his section of the county, giving his earnest support to every movement having for its object the advancement of the public interests. He belongs to the Masons, the Knights of Pythias, the Woodmen of the World and the Columbia Country Club. A man of high principles and sincere purposes, he has long commanded the unqualified confidence of his fellowmen and is deservedly popular among his acquaintances.
