J. Clarke Publishing Company A. J. MCMILLAN is a member of one of the old and prominent families of Oregon and a typical westerner. He is a partner in a well known contracting firm of Portland and a veteran of the World war. His birth occurred at Kaslo, British Columbia, May 1, 1894, and his parents were A. J. and Annie E. (Parker) McMillan. When a young man his father entered the field of journalism and was a correspondent for some of the leading democratic newspapers of the east, afterward becoming a civil engineer. Coming to Oregon when this was a frontier region, he was here engaged in building railroads, also constructed tunnels through the Siskiyou mountains in California for the Southern Pacific system and was with the engineers on the development of the coast harbors. Later he crossed the Canadian border and continued his activities as a railroad builder, aiding in opening up the province of British Columbia. His engineering skill won for him a commission in the east and he was one of the builders of the Croton aqueduct in New York. Mr. McMillan was a distinguished representative of his profession and his was a successful career of broad usefulness. In 1914 he was called to his final rest. His widow is living in Toledo, Oregon, where her mother also resides. Mrs. Parker has reached the venerable age of ninety-seven years and is one of Oregon's oldest pioneers. Mrs. McMillan's father, Allen E. Parker, migrated to Oregon in 1852 and was the second sheriff of Linn county. He was one of the prominent business men of Albany and conducted a flour mill in addition to his operations in connection with the lumber industry. Mr. Parker was first senior warden of Newport Lodge, No. 85, F. & A. M., also aided in organizing the first Masonic lodge at Albany and was an exemplary member of the order. He was one of the first commissioners on the Oregon City locks and aided in pushing forward the wheels of progress in this region. A. J. McMillan (II) received a public school education and under the expert instruction of his father was thoroughly trained in the work of civil engineering. That the son was an apt pupil is indicated by the fact that at the age of twenty-one he was made county engineer of Lincoln county, Oregon, and fully justified the confidence reposed in his ability. Later he was city engineer of Toledo and Newport, Oregon, and since 1922 has been associated with Ward Mayer in the contracting business under the style of Mayer & McMillan. Their work is performed with thoroughness and skill and has become an important feature in Portland's upbuilding and improvement. In 1920 Mr. McMillan was married in Seattle, Washington, to Miss Emma Gertrude McKnight and they now have two children, Enita and Donald. Mr. McMillan enlisted in the United States Army in 1917 and went overseas with the Thirty-second Engineers, remaining in Europe for over a year. He won the commission of second lieutenant and is now a member of the Officers Reserve Corps. In the formation of the Toledo Post of the American Legion he was the leading spirit and was made the first commander of the post. At Toledo, this state, he also organized Voiture No. 728 of the Forty & Eight and was its first chef de gare. He is also a Royal Arch Mason. He is a registered civil engineer in Oregon and a member of the Society of American Military Engineers. Mr. McMillan is the only republican in a prominent democratic family and has filled the offices of deputy sheriff and deputy assessor. Although young in years, he has accomplished much and displays in his character the admirable qualities of his pioneer forbears.
