J. Clarke Publishing Company RALPH T. MONTAG, who is the executive head of the Montag Stove Works, at Portland, has had practical experience in every department of the business and is well qualified for the responsible relations which he sustains and in which he is meeting with marked success. Mr. Montag was born in Quincy, Illinois, on the 4th of March, 1884, a son of William and Sophia (Petrie) Montag. In May, 1887, the family came to Portland, where the father entered the employ of his brother, John Montag, who had established stove works. He died in 1915 and is survived by his widow, who still lives in this city. Ralph T. Montag attended the public schools and had one year in high school. He then entered his uncle's foundry, in which he was employed five years as a moulder, after which he took a course in a business college. He next took a position as stenographer with the Powers Furniture Company, and later served one and a half years as a salesman for that concern, subsequently he returned to the Montag Stove Works and served successively as superintendent, traveling salesman, secretary and plant manager, while for the past twelve years he has been practically in charge of the business. The product of this concern is sold all over the northwest and has gained marked popularity. Sales offices are maintained in Portland, Tacoma, Seattle and San Francisco, and five traveling salesmen represent the Portland office. The company also operates a retail furnace department, in which three salesmen are employed in Tacoma and five in Portland. It manufactures and sells direct a splendid residence furnace, adapted for either wood, coal or oil fuel, that has proven successful under all kinds of conditions. This company made a very notable record when, after the big fire of December, 1919, through the splendid cooperation on the part of the members of the organization, it got its new plant completed and was manufacturing and delivering goods by May 1st. On July 19, 1916, Mr. Montag was united in marriage to Miss Franke Hazel Winters, of Portland, a daughter, of L. L. and Calantha H. (Clark) Winters, who were numbered among the pioneers of this locality. Mr. and Mrs. Montag are the parents of two children, Ralph T., Jr., and Constance Louise. Mr. Montag is a member of Kenton Lodge, No. 145, A. F. & A. M.; Oregon Consistory, No. 1, A. A. S. R.; Al Kader Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S.; the Columbia Country Club, of which he is a director; the Chamber of Commerce, and the Oregon Manufacturers Association, of which he is a director. He is also a director of the Portland Woolen Mills. A man of earnest purpose and dependable business judgment, he has gained a high place in the respect of his fellowmen, and commands the friendship of all who have been associated with him.
