     WALTER H. NASH, who is the Portland manager for A. G. Spalding & 
Brothers, nationally known manufacturers of and dealers in athletic goods, has 
proven a wide-awake and capable business man, having made of the Portland 
branch one of the leading Spalding stores on the coast. Mr. Nash is a native 
of Detroit, Michigan, and a son of P. C. and Minnie Nash. His father, who was 
an artist, was a native of England, and after coming to this country lived in 
Detroit, Michigan; Los Angeles, California; Portland, Oregon; Seattle, 
Washington, and Vancouver, British Columbia. He died in 1912 and is survived 
by his widow, who was born in Michigan and now makes her home with her son in 
Portland.

     Walter H. Nash attended school in Portland, Los Angeles and Seattle, 
after which he was a student in the University of Washington. He was always 
interested in athletic sports and when Spaldings established their branch 
store in Seattle it was but natural that the young man should seek employment 
with that firm. He remained there until the family again moved to Los Angeles, 
California, and when a Spalding store was opened there in 1910 he was 
transferred to that city, where he remained until 1918, when he was 
transferred to Portland and put in charge of their store, which position he 
has held continuously since, being under the coast division headquarters at 
San Francisco. This concern has stores in practically all of the principal 
cities of the United States and the Portland store was opened in 1909. This 
branch does a wholesale and retail business, covering Oregon and parts of 
Washington and Idaho, having two traveling men on the road. The store handles 
all the articles manufactured by the company, as well as a few other lines, 
such as clothing, made by outside firms, their products including everything 
required in any line of athletic sport. The company makes it a point to 
develop men who are specially interested in a particular line of sport, and 
Mr. Nash personally handles the golf end of the business, for he greatly 
enjoys the game. The original Spalding store in Portland was located on 
Washington street, from which location it was later moved to Broadway and 
Alder streets, where it remained until October, 1927, when it came to larger 
and better arranged quarters at its present location at 187 Sixth street.

     On April 12, 1918, in Los Angeles, California, Mr. Nash was united in 
marriage to Miss Virginia Catherwood, and they are the parents of a daughter, 
Shirley Jean, who is now seven years of age. Mr. Nash is a member of the 
Portland Rotary Club, the Multnomah Athletic Club, the Multnomah Golf Club and 
the Portland Golf Club. He was also interested in and helped to establish the 
East Moreland golf course and has been an active factor in developing and 
popularizing the municipal golf courses, in which he has performed an 
appreciated public service. It is a notable fact that Spalding golf balls have 
won every major tournament in the last twenty years in this country. Through 
his uniform courtesy and accommodating manner, Mr. Nash has made a host of 
warm friends and all who have come in contact with him hold him in the highest 
regard.
