Clarke Publishing Company LESLIE J. NICHOLS, of Portland, western manager for the Cousins Lumber Company, while still a comparatively young man, has made rapid progress in the business world and has shown business ability of a high order, the position which he is so capably filling being one of large responsibility. Mr. Nichols was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on the 19th of December, 1902, and is a son of Warren F. and Sadie (Gerbrick) Nichols, the former born in Putnam, Connecticut, and the latter in Indiana. His father went to St. Louis in young manhood and became connected with the Morris Packing Company at St. Joseph, Missouri, as a livestock buyer. He was with that concern continuously for thirty-five years and is now retired, living in St. Joseph at the age of sixty years. Leslie J. Nichols attended the public schools of St. Joseph, graduating from high school, and also attended Washington University, at St. Louis. He entered the employ of the Cousins Lumber Company, working as a lumber handler in the yards. Later he was employed in the general office of the company at St. Joseph, where his efficiency in the discharge of his duties led to his appointment to his present position in 1925. The Cousins Lumber Company was organized and incorporated in 1910, with a capital stock of five hundred thousand dollars, and is now one of the largest concerns in its line in the central west. It maintains two exclusively wholesale yards at Grand Island, Nebraska, and Atchison, Kansas, and has nine retail yards at advantageous points. It has twenty traveling salesmen, who cover the territory from Illinois to Oklahoma, and the company buys from a thousand to fifteen hundred carloads of Oregon lumber a year, to the value of over a million dollars. Mr. Nichols has entire charge of the Pacific end of the business, which he has handled in a very satisfactory manner. On June 15, 1926, in Portland, Mr. Nichols was united in marriage to Miss Maravene Copley, who is a graduate of the Portland high school. Mr. Nichols is a member of Charity Lodge, No. 331, A. F. & A. M., at St. Joseph, Missouri; has received the degrees of the York rite, and belongs to Moila Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S., at St. Joseph. He is a member of the Portland Golf Club and a great lover of outdoor sports. While in the St. Joseph high school he played four years on all of the athletic teams and played football and basketball at Washington University. He is a man of energetic and progressive methods, possesses an attractive personality and is cordial and friendly in his social relations, so that throughout the range of his acquaintance he commands the esteem and good will of his fellowmen.
