Clarke Publishing Company Author: History of the Columbia River Valley From The Dalles to the Sea, Vol. III, Published 1928, Page 270 ARTHUR F. NICOLAI, secretary of the Nicolai Door Manufacturing Company, of Portland, is an effective factor in the conduct of the business, particularly in the operation of the plant, having made a close study of and had practical experience in the various problems of factory management. Mr. Nicolai was born in Portland in 1890 and is a son of Theo and Hannah (Lieb) Nicolai, the former a resident of this city continuously since 1864. He established the first planing mill in Portland, under the firm name of Nicolai Brothers, and also operated a sawmill. This firm was succeeded by the Nicolai- Neppach Company, and Mr. Nicolai is now retired from active business. Arthur F. Nicolai attended the public schools, graduating from high school, and also attended Allen's Preparatory School. He served an apprenticeship at the machinist's trade, at which he worked for a time. He was a close student of mechanics, particularly as to the application and use of electricity, and gained wide experience as an employee of the Portland Electric Company, with which concern he remained for two years. Desiring also practical experience in steam operations, he shipped as a fireman and worked on a steamship to Australia and return, after which he traveled over the country, working in various factories in Detroit and in the steel mills in Youngstown, Ohio. He then came home and enlisted in the United States air service, in which he was assigned to the Twenty-second Balloon Company. The war closed before he was ordered overseas and he was honorably discharged, after which he joined his brother, Harry T. Nicolai, in the operation of the Nicolai Door Manufacturing Company. He had for some time been the secretary of the company, in which he had been investing from time to time, and he now took an active part, continuing to act as secretary and also devoting a large part of his attention to the factory management. In 1920 Mr. Nicolai was united in marriage to Miss Louise A. Stengel, who was born in Minnesota, but was living in Portland at the time of her marriage. They are the parents of two children, Theodore and Gretchen. Mr. Nicolai gives his political support to the republican party and is a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, the Arlington Club and the Columbia Country Club. He is a member of the board of directors of the Peninsula National Bank and is held in high regard in the business circles of this city, while throughout the range of his acquaintance he is respected for his genuine worth as a man and citizen.
