Clarke Publishing Company DR. BEN L. NORDEN, M. D., a well known physician and surgeon of Portland, where he has been continuously engaged in practice during the past twenty years, is widely recognized as one of the skilled and successful representatives of his profession. He is a native son of Portland, born in 1879. His father, Ben L. Norden, a native of New York, arrived in Portland, Oregon, as early as 1859 and was connected with the United States customs service here. He was a democrat in politics and took an active part in public affairs, serving most acceptably in the capacities of sheriff, county clerk and auditor. His death occurred in 1898. In Portland he married Miss Mary Maher, a native of Ireland, who had emigrated to the United States in 1861 and had come to this city in 1867 via the Isthmus of Panama and by way of San Francisco. In their family were a son and two daughters, namely: Ben L., of this review; Mrs. W. E. Prudhome; and Frances. Ben L. Norden acquired his early education in Portland and received his more advanced classical and professional training in the University of Oregon, being graduated from the Medical department of that institution in 1907 and the Law Department in 1915. Subsequently to 1907 he served as interne and house surgeon in St. Vincents Hospital, Portland, terminating his service there in May, 1908. After which he pursued postgraduate studies in the New York Postgraduate Hospital mid New York Polyclinic. In addition to meeting the demands of his private practice he served for two terms as coroner, to which office he was elected in 1908 and again in 1910. Dr. Norden was a surgeon in the United States Navy during the period of the World war and was on board the U. S. S. South Dakota. After the armistice he served on U. S. S. Aeolus, plying between Hampton Roads and France in the transport service. He was afterward assigned to duty at the U. S. Marine recruiting station in Portland, Oregon, and following his honorable discharge from the service in 1921 returned to private practice in Portland where he has since been actively engaged in the work of his chosen profession and has been accorded a very gratifying practice. Through his membership in the City and County Medical Society he keeps thoroughly informed concerning the most advanced methods and theories of the science of medicine and surgery, and on the staff of St. Vincent's Hospital his services are much appreciated. Dr. Norden gives his political support to the republican party and fraternally is affiliated with the Knights of Columbus, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Woodmen of the World and the Royal Arcanum. By a life consistent in motive and because of his many fine qualities of head and heart he has earned the sincere regard of a vast acquaintance in fraternal, social and professional circles of his native city.
