J. Clarke Publishing Company A. PEDERSON is president of the Dependable Upholstering Company, of Portland, which has gained a wide reputation as manufacturers of high grade furniture, the result being a steady and increasing demand for its products throughout the Pacific northwest. The company was founded in 1921 by A. Pederson and H. R. Mauseth, and business was begun at the present location in what was formerly known as the old fire hall, at 433 North Twenty-sixth street, where the company owns four lots. The plant occupies a one-story building, forty by one hundred feet, and a two-story building, fifty by seventy feet. The company manufactures a complete line of the better grade of upholstered furniture on order, and among its regular patrons are such firms as Meier & Frank, of Portland; Bon Marchae and Frederick & Nelson, of Seattle, Washington; the Spokane Dry Goods Company and Culbertson, of Spokane, Washington; the Crawford Furniture Company and the Greenwald Furniture Company, of Salt Lake City, Utah; and the Standard Furniture Company, of Boise, Idaho. The company specializes in lobby furniture and has equipped such hotels as the Eugene, the Roosevelt, the Heathman and the Imperial, in Portland, as well as the Seaside and Gearhart hotels, at Gearhart, and also made the furniture for the Masonic and Elk temples, in Portland. The company makes a fine line of box spring and hair mattresses and the firm's name, "Dependable," well describes the quality of its products. From twenty- five to forty men are employed, practically all of whom are skilled in their special lines, and the annual payroll amounts to about fifty thousand dollars. A. Pederson was born in Norway on the 11th of November, 1879, and is a son of George and Olivia (Arneson) Pederson, farming folk, of whom the former is deceased. Mr. Pederson received a public school education in his native land and there learned the upholsterer's trade. In 1900, about the time he attained his majority, he emigrated to the United States and located in Chicago, Illinois, where he entered the employ of the Johnson Chair Company, for which concern he served as foreman for nine years. In 1912 he came to Portland and worked at his trade as a journeyman for two years, after which he became a foreman for Meier & Frank, with which firm he remained until 1921, when he resigned and entered his present business, which has steadily grown and now amounts to over one hundred and forty thousand dollars a year. Mr. Pederson has given close attention to his interests and has earnestly striven for and maintained the highest standard in the quality of production, which has been the basic reason for his success. In 1910 Mr. Pederson was united in marriage to Miss Ellen Frederickson, who is a native of Sweden, from which country she was brought to America in young girlhood, her family locating in Chicago. Mr. Pederson gives his political support to the republican party and fraternally is a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He is a man of wide experience in his line of business, has exercised excellent judgment in all of his affairs and his record has gained for him the sincere respect of all who know him, while socially he has made many warm friends in this community.
