Clarke Publishing Company WILLIAM C. PEER, manager at Portland for Lees Brothers of New York, was born in Ionia, Michigan, on the 8th of July, 1869, and is a son of Philander and Victoria Peer, the former a farmer and both of whom are now deceased. William C. Peer received a good education in the public schools of his native state and was first regularly employed as a clerk in a retail store in Ionia. He was in business for himself for awhile, after which he was a traveling salesman for John V. Farwell for several years. Again he engaged in a mercantile business at Ionia on his own account, and later he went on the road again as a traveling salesman. In 1908 he came to Portland and was employed in the same capacity for some time, after which he traveled out of New York city until May 1, 1911, when he became associated with Lees Brothers as their representative in Seattle, Washington. In 1913 he opened an office in Portland for Lees Brothers and has since served here as manager. He is a wholesale dealer in ready-to-wear garments and covers the states of Oregon, Idaho and Utah and part of Washington. He has been tireless in his efforts to build up the business and now commands a very satisfactory trade throughout this territory. Mr. Peer was married to Miss Jessie Stone, who was born and reared in Michigan, and who died, leaving two children, Theo, who married Max Flemming and resides in Portland, and Russell S., who is with the Richfield Gas Company in Portland. For his second wife Mr. Peer chose Miss Sarah Louise Welch, of Michigan. He owns a comfortable and attractive home at 690 Weidler street. He gives his political support to the republican party and is a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and the Chamber of Commerce. He is the representative of one of the largest jobbing houses in the United States, having offices in all of the principal cities of the country, and his success in his present field has been due to his persistent and determined efforts, backed by sound and discriminating judgment. He carries from twenty thousand to eighty thousand dollars worth of goods and is thus enabled to give prompt delivery to his patrons.
