J. Clarke Publishing Company One of the principal offices in the municipal government of Portland is that of commissioner of finance, the duties of which are being discharged by Stanhope S. Pier in a very satisfactory manner. This is a position demanding business qualities of the highest order and he has fully met the requirements of the office, in which he has successfully endeavored to promote the city's interests. Mr. Pier was born in Pontiac, Michigan, May 24, 1882, and is a son of Sylvester C. and Ethaline (Cole) Pier. From Michigan the family moved to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and a short time later to Wichita, Kansas, where they lived until 1891, when they came to Portland. His father became sales manager for the Marshall-Wells Hardware Company, with which he remained many years, but is now retired. Stanhope S. Pier obtained a public school education, graduating from high school, after which he took a commercial course in the Portland Business College. He went to work for the Marshall-Wells Hardware Company in 1902, remaining with that firm until December 1, 1922, during which time he was successively promoted until he became assistant sales manager. In November, 1922, he was elected city commissioner of finance, taking the office on July 1, 1923, and in November, 1926, was reelected. On June 22, 1904, Mr. Pier was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Olive Trueblood, of Portland, and they have a daughter, Marion Elizabeth, now eleven years of age. Mr. and Mrs. Pier are earnest members of the Congregational church, to which they give liberal support. Mr. Pier belongs to the Woodmen of the World, the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, the Loyal Order of Moose, the Improved Order of Red Men, the Lions Club, the Chamber of Commerce. the Klahanee Tillicums, the Eastside Commercial Club, the Anglers Club, the Press Club, the Multnomah Athletic Club, the Travelers Protective Association, the Travelers Benefit Association and the Motor Association. Politically he is a republican. A man of pleasing address and cordial manner, he is deservedly popular and has many warm friends throughout the city.
