Wakley iwakley@msn.com June 1, 2010, 10:02 pm Source: History of the Columbia River Valley From The Dalles to the Sea, Vol. III, Published 1928, Pages 398 - 399 Author: The S. J. Clarke Publishing Company DARRELL L. POVEY, president and manager of Povey Brothers, of Portland, makers of ornamental stained glass windows, is at the head of the oldest and largest business of its kind in the northwest and has won a reputation as a thoroughly progressive business man. Mr. Povey was born in this city, on the 14th of June, 1900, and is a son of David L. and Hannah M. Povey, who became residents of Portland in 1888. The father, in partnership with his brother, John E. Povey, under the firm name of Povey Brothers, established an ornamental stained glass plant at Front and Ankeny streets, but later moved it to Sixth and Davis streets. The business enjoyed a steady and substantial growth and in 1905 Mr. Povey erected the Povey building, of three stories, fifty by one hundred feet, at Fifth and Flanders streets, where the business is still located. The company occupies the second and third floors. David L. Povey died in March, 1924, and is survived by his widow, who still resides in Portland. Darrell L. Povey attended the public schools, graduating from high school, and then enlisted in the United States Navy for service in the World war. He was stationed at Bremerton, Washington, until the close of the conflict, when he was honorably discharged. He then became associated with his father in the glass business and since the death of his father has had complete charge of the business. The firm has put in the art glass in many of the most important public structures in this part of the country, including the new Temple Beth Israel, the First Christian church, the First Congregational church, the First Methodist Episcopal church, the First Presbyterian church, the Rose City Park Methodist Episcopal church, Trinity Protestant Episcopal church and St. Mary's Roman Catholic cathedral, besides many residences, libraries and other public buildings. The glass is hand painted and then burned, by which process the coloring is rendered indestructible. Mr. Povey's two sisters and other artists do the painting and the firm takes a justifiable pride in the superior quality of its product, which has successfully met the demands of discriminating architects and builders. Mr. Povey's father was the first man on the coast to undertake this kind of work and during the years the company has maintained its position as the leader in this line in the entire northwest, having executed contracts in many of the cities of this region, particularly in Seattle. Mr. Povey is a republican in his political views and fraternally is a Mason. He is courteous and accommodating in his business associations, is true to the highest ideal in relation to the art feature of his business, and commands the genuine regard of all who have had dealings with him.
