Clarke Publishing Company CHARLES B. RUSSELL. For twenty years Charles B. Russell has been actively identified with the banking business in Portland and, as vice president of the Peninsula National Bank, is an important factor in the prosperity of this section of the city. Mr. Russell was born in Portage, Wisconsin, in 1877, and is a son of J. M. and Emma Ella Russell, of whom the latter died in 1878, soon after the birth of her son. J. M. Russell came to Portland in 1918 and his death occurred here in 1927. Charles B. Russell attended the public schools in his native state, graduating from high school, after which he engaged in the fire insurance business. He was also in the abstract business for about three years, and in 1898 went to Denver, Colorado, where he engaged in the insurance business. While there he was engaged in making rates for the board of underwriters for Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico. In 1906 Mr. Russell came to Portland, and two years later he and his brother-in-law, Frank Drinker, organized the First National Bank of St. Johns, of which Mr. Russell became assistant cashier in 1910. On January 1, 1917, the First National and the Peninsula National Banks were consolidated, under the name of the Peninsula National Bank of Portland, of which Mr. Russell served as cashier until the death of Mr. Drinker, when he was made vice president, which position he is still holding. He is treasurer and a director of the Peninsula Security Company, which he helped to organize about 1912, and is also a director of the Purdy Brush Company, makers of paint brushes. In 1908 Mr. Russell was united in marriage to Miss Alice E. Drinker, whose father, Albert E. Drinker, came to Portland about 1896, and is now deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Russell have two children, Jack D., who is now seventeen years of age, and Charles B., Jr., aged ten years. Mr. Russell is a life member and a past master of Doric Lodge, No. 132, A. F. & A. M.; Oregon Consistory No. 1, A. A. S. R., in which he has received the thirty-second degree; Portland Lodge, No. 142, B. P. O. E.; the Order of the Eastern Star, of which he is the worthy patron, and the Columbia Country Club. In his political views he is a strong republican. He has shown a genuine interest in everything relating to the material or civic progress of his community and, because of his fine public spirit and his sterling character, is held in high regard by all who know him.
