Clarke Publishing Company Author: History of the Columbia River Valley From The Dalles to the Sea, Vol. III, Published 1928, Page 271 THEODOR SCHIEL, proprietor of one of Portland's leading plumbing establishments, has been engaged in that line of business here continuously for twenty-one years, during which he has won a reputation as an expert and dependable plumber and has enjoyed a large and representative patronage. Mr. Schiel was born in Freeberg, Germany, on the 24th of September, 1884, and is a son of Isador and Lena Schiel. Soon after his birth the family emigrated to the United States, settling at Charles City, Iowa, where the father bought a farm, to the operation of which he devoted his efforts for seven years. In 1891 he sold out there and, coming to Oregon, bought another farm, which, however, he later lost. He entered the employ of the Doernbecher Furniture Company, with which he was identified for twenty years, but is now retired and lives in Portland. His wife died in 1912. Theodor Schiel attended the public schools to the age of twelve years, when he learned the baking trade, at which he was employed in Portland for several years. He then learned the plumbing trade, in which line of work he was employed by the Stark-Davis Company and H. F. Bruce. In 1907 Mr. Schiel engaged in the plumbing business on his own account at 1035 Union avenue, where he remained until 1910, when he built a new home at 340 Wyant street, and close by erected a plumbing shop. He is the oldest plumber in this part of the city, has an up-to-date shop, equipped with the best tools and appliances, and takes a justifiable pride in the character of the service which he renders. In 1910 Mr. Schiel was united in marriage to Miss Wilda Frey, who was born in North Dakota, but has lived in Portland since her early girlhood. They have a son, Clifford, who is now ten years of age. In his political views Mr. Schiel is a strong republican and he and his wife are earnest members of the Hinson Memorial Baptist church.
