J. Clarke Publishing Company For over thirty years Dr. Joseph M. Short, of Portland, has been engaged in the practice of medicine and surgery and bears a reputation for skill and trustworthiness second to no other physician in this section of the state. He was born in Elora, on the Grand river, Canada, in 1871, and is a son of William and Mary (Faulkner) Short. The father was a pioneer of his section of Canada, having carved his home out of the wilderness. He was married at Elora and to him and his wife were born thirteen children, John, James, William, Mary, Sarah, Robert, Joseph I., Ralph, Jane, Faulkner, Bessie, Louise and Samuel, of whom Bessie, Faulkner, James and William are deceased. Both parents have also passed away. Joseph M. Short received his early education in the public schools of Canada and during his school days he took an active part in outdoor sports particularly football and lacrosse. He took up the study of medicine at the University of Toronto, Canada, and completed his course at the Detroit College of Medicine and Surgery, Detroit, Michigan, from which he was graduated with the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1896. He took postgraduate work in New York city and subsequently had three terms of postgraduate work in Chicago. He entered upon the practice of his profession at Solon Springs, Wisconsin, where he remained three and a half years, and in 1900 located in Gresham, Oregon. In 1912 Dr. Short came to Portland, where he has been engaged in the general practice of medicine and surgery to the present time. Though a busy man, he has been a constant student of his profession, keeping up-to-date in his knowledge of advanced methods in both medical practice and surgery, and he enjoys a large practice. He recalls some of the experiences of his early practice, when as physician for the Weyerhaeuser and Allied lumber companies in northern Wisconsin, he was frequently called upon to make long and tiresome trips into remote parts of the forests. When starting at Gresham, Oregon, there were no regular physicians between that town and Mount Hood, so that calls anywhere from Bridal Veil to Welches were answered sometimes with horses and buggy, sometimes horseback and sometimes with neither. Except the very early settlers of the original Powell valley he waited upon all the pioneer families of eastern Multnomah and northeastern Clackamas counties, including such pioneer families as Latourelle, Hurlburt, Lusted, Revenue and Meinig, of whom now only second generation members are living. This was in the early sawmill days when plank roads were the first big improvement on corduroy. Sometimes a whole day was consumed in one call where now all could be called upon in one day. This was in some respects a valuable experience, and some phases of his life there were very pleasant. Dr. Short was united in marriage to Miss Sarah A. King at Solon Springs, Wisconsin, in 1898. She is a native of Kingsville, Ontario, Canada. To them have been born three children, namely: Mary Dorothea, who was graduated from Mills College, Oakland, California, and Prince School, Boston, Massachusetts; Katherine Isabel, who is the wife of Harold Schmeer; and Ruth Elizabeth. The republican party receives the Doctor's political support and he is a member of the Waverly Golf Club. He belongs to the Portland City and County Medical Society, the Oregon State Medical Society, the American Medical Association, the Academy of Medicine, and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the staffs of the Good Samaritan and Multnomah County Hospitals, and is assistant professor of clinical medicine in the medical school of the University of Oregon. To the practice of his profession he has brought rare skill and to a definite degree he has been a benefactor to mankind. Because of his professional success and his kindly and sympathetic manner, he is held in high regard throughout the community and has a large circle of loyal friends.
